Rory McIlroy signs with Nike.. Rory and Tiger Film Commercial Together (Updates) - Page 4

Boo ... I hope he stays with Oakley ... what happened to making something for yourself? If he is as good as some think then he should easily grow any brand he is with. With this thinking I wouldn't mind if he left for a smaller operation that he has a piece of and then he can make it something great. Don't follow Tiger, be yourself. I guess I am just not on the whole Nike makes everything boat. (Skateboarding, Road Bikes etc) Anyway ... one mans opinion

Hopefully someone can answer this.

I'm not sure why switching to Nike would require McIlroy to change clubs.  In tennis, the pros play with whatever racquet they want and its just painted to look like their sponsors raquet.  Very few pros use an actual Prince Thunderstick (a very popular consumer model) but several top pros use racquets that are painted like the thunderstick.

is it this way in golf?  Why wouldn't they just put a nike symbol on his current irons?

$25M/yr over the next 10yrs?  He could have ownership in one of the smaller apparel companies and never sniff that type of return.

How about some white out and a Sharpie. Seriously though I agree this is a plausable yet deceptive alternative.

Some would suggest they are already doing that since pro's won't use anything but the magical Miura forged irons.

I actually don't think he's going to leave Titleist, this rumour has now come 2 years in a row and nothing has come about, McIlroy doesn't need the money, his main priority is winning golf tournaments.

Who is actually doing that?

Rumors were that Tigers early Nike clubs were actually Mirura's, but overall I was just making a joke based on some past threads here.

I thought the rumors were true but then I saw this

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=anpejfXY9Qyc&refer=amsports)

Quote:

Some consider Woods to be using Miura forged irons hand crafted by the legendary Katsuhiro Miura himself and then stamped with the logo of his sponsor. Tiger Woods, the world's top-ranked golfer, who is paid about $20 million a year to endorse Nike equipment, said at a news conference last month that he never has used Miura clubs or met Miura himself. Beth Gast, a spokeswoman for Nike Inc.'s golf division, said in an e-mail that Miura never has made clubs for the Beaverton, Oregon-based company.

Miura said in an e-mail that he has made wedges for Nike, and his company's Web site says that in the late 1990s he forged irons for Woods under the Titleist name, then a Woods sponsor.

Miura, who won't comment directly about Woods, made 500 sets of limited-edition Tiger Woods Titleist models exclusively for the Japanese market in the late 1990s, Holowaty said.

I'm sure Rory finding a set of irons that works for him won't be a problem if he goes to Nike.  The ball might be a bigger change.  Check out what Cobra did for Fowler, look similar to Titleist MB's?

These guys are so good, it really doesn't matter what they play.  I don't imagine Rory will be any more or less effective if he plays with Titleist, Nike or anything else.

Ironic, though, as Scotty Cameron made an 'Inspired by Rory McIlroy" putter earlier this year.  Talk about a slap in the face!

It would seem that way but some players have struggled after switching to a different sponsor for their irons.  It could be coincidence or just confidence issues, but not everyone makes the switch seamlessly.  Some guys, like Luke Donald, have struggled when switching to newer versions of clubs from the same manufacturer.

You seem to care enough to get worked up over it a little bit.

Who the heck is OLIMAR?  I'm guessing Furyk didn't grow the brand with his bigger-than-life personality and dashing looks?

Perhaps they are getting stronger because of the contract expiration situation?

I think he would do well with whomever gives him the best deal...  But, money talk$...  Big Time!!!

I'm guessing he meant "Orlimar." "Olimar" was a character in those Pikman video games for GameCube.

Maybe he is the second most marketable athlete in the world but 10 years is a long time, and not many guys have a 10 year run in them in pro golf today, just my opinion. I know if you add up all the money they make it may seem an easy leap but $250 million? Thats two and a half careers as good as tiger's in tourney earnings. Think about how much money that is, and I realize this guy is much, much more marketable than Paddy Harrington, but had Nike inked him to this kind of deal in 2008 they would be eating it now. Anyway, really interesting forum.

Sorry, but are you saying Rory is the second most marketable golfer in the world or athlete? Golfer probably (Mickelson and a couple others are still quite marketable too) but athlete? Would he even be in the top 20? Not sure - honest question.

Titleist says it's not renewing Rory McIlroy's equipment contract. Rumors rampant of lucrative Nike deal for Rory. 1+1=2?
