Make a difference in one's golf game. NO, I'm sure. But I believe it's a Trion bracelet with multiple magnets that he wears.

They look stylish.

Anyone wear one and notice any difference as far as balance, flexibility, recovery?

Or is it just massive hype.

I was at goldsmith in LI NY, and a guy working there was pushing "power balance" bracelets i think it's called.

He then said "put it on, i'll show you." "gives you incredible balance" he says.

I then stood on one foot, and he pushed me without the bracelet ( a rather hard shove)....i fell over a bit.

"here put this bracelet on"......he then pushed me again and i stood. Now I'm not an idiot...this bracelet is 40 bucks....he barely pushed me the 2nd time....OF COURSE IM NOT TOPPLING OVER! lol

Right there....I said nah to that bracelet, and nah to the Trion Magnet bracelet.

SO.....hype or anyone notice anything????

The best thing to do is ask the salesman if he'll wear one and let you push him... Works best if you're a big guy. Usually shuts them up. Was this the Golfsmith near the Smith Haven Mall, by any chance?

I suppose that there is an element of the Placebo Effect, but you would think that anybody with half a brain would use common sense and not get tricked by it. You never know though, it could be superstition, tried it one day, had a good round and now he doesn't want to take it off.

The real reason probably, is that he gets paid quite a healthy sum to hear a bracelet, i know i would.

I'm not sure the study off of the top of my head, but it was published in Psychological Science in 2010.  They showed that golfers holed 37% more putts on average if they told them they were playing with a lucky ball.  I'm sure that the golfers knew it wasn't actually lucky, but the subconscious power of positive thought is pretty powerful.  Those 3 footers seem to slide right by the hole on a bad day.

Ha.  I don't go to malls much so I've never actually run into one of those guys, but that's a nice come back I'll try to remember if I ever do get solicited!

And I can't believe people think that might actually work in so dramatic a way.  Do we not understand 100% of what happens in the body and there's some miniscule chance it has some vaguely beneficial background effect for the wrist?  I guess in theory.  But thinking there's any chance it significantly increases your general balance, strength, or flexibility is just dumb.

On BioGolfNebraska's point, though, sure if you think it'll help you then in golf it probably will.  The placebo effect is incredibly powerful!  Also on his point, there have been a bunch of studies done where people were given a placebo and TOLD that it was a placebo, and they still improved significantly more than those who received no treatment at all (either the informed placebo or the real treatment).

Pure, unadulterated hogwash, but there is no denying that the placebo effect is real.  If you believe strongly enough, then you can convince yourself of just about anything.  Fortunately (or unfortunately, if you want to look at it that way), I've rarely fallen for these pitches.  This is a case where the science simply doesn't support their contentions, but somehow it's still legal for them to make those outrageous claims anyway.  I really don't get it.

Power Balance themselves have admitted that these products are a scam with no scientific evidence to support their claims. Google it.:-)

Even if it is the placebo effect, I almost want to try the bracelet out and see how I feel, haha. I've always wanted to experience having a lucky item. Like Doug Funnie when he finds that hat that eventually gets blown away by the wind.

Dude, go to the hardware store, buy $0.79 worth of magnets, and glue them to a $0.99 bracelet. I personally guarantee you'll sink 30% more putts and hit 15% more fairways while wearing this bracelet.

Plus, you save $15 and don't support the snake oil scamsters.

Rory has never won a major without a Trion Bracelet.

Even if he pushed you pretty hard the second time, it's likely you would have felt much more stable the second time.   That's a fairly well understood psychological trick going back to the days of snake oil salesmen (and long before that as well, probably to early Romans?).    The first time you don't know what to expect - your body isn't expecting to be pushed over and you haven't subconsciously braced for it.   But after you've been pushed once and put the bracelet on, your brain knows what's coming and your subconscious kicks in and does its thing.

Unless the bracelet is some new design as the first practical application of the recent discovery of the Higgs-Boson particle and it uses those to change the laws of matter and the universe in a small sphere around your body, then it is snake oil.    Doesn't mean it doesn't look good or give you a placebo feeling, but as science goes it is still snake oil.

Total scam and has little to do with psychology.  I was exhibiting at a trade show and the booth across the aisle was selling a "balance" bracelet.  Over the course of three days I probably saw them do the demo 500 times.  Halfway thru day two I figured out how they create the sense of balance when the "pigeon" was wearing the bracelet.  It was really quite clever. They used only two fingers to move someone off balance simply by pulling ever so slightly away from the body.  When the bracelet was on they pressed down and towards the body.  Nothing more than a carnival act.  But to their credit they sold enough to walk away from the show with a tidy profit.

If you watch the infomercials for some of the bracelets that they say promote balance, you can actually see them pushing the people with and without the bracelets differently.
