I was fitted a few years ago for a standard grip with 3 layers of tape, and the Lamkin website suggests the same based on my hand measurements.

I am regripping my clubs myself for the first time so forgive me if my questions are a bit stupid.  I am very happy about the fitting process and am confident that I can do it without problems.  But I am a bit confused about the 3 layers.

I presume when they say 3 layers of tape they mean 3 layers of a certain thickness of tape.  Is it ok to use 2 layers of masking tape and then 1 layer of double sided tape to make up the 3 layers?  Would masking tape be thick enough to count as 1 layer?  Or would 2 layers of masking tape equate to 1 of the 3 layers?

Hope that makes sense to everyone!!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

3 layers would be 3 layers of masking tape plus the 2 sided tape (usually a given) or you could get away with 3 layers of 2 sided tape total.

Masking tape adds about .01 (.005 thick) and 2 sided tape adds about .015 (.0075 thick). Remember that you double the thickness because it affects diameter because the tape is on both sides of any measuring point.

Here are 2 great links. Moparman426 found the first one and the second one is the one I have used in the past.

"3 layers of 2 sided tape total", is the way my fitter told me to do it.

The math works out the same for this example. A lot of people don't use the 2 sided tape for build up because it is more expensive than regular masking tape.

    • Day 35, June 8. Before leaving for work this morning (yes, I'm posting this quite late relative to the practice), I spent 15 minutes practicing at home, into a net.  This time, it was primarily 9-iron (full swings), with some UW (full and half) and a few 6-iron.
    • Day 73: just some mirror work today. Working on feels for being open and getting the front shoulder down.
    • I'm liking this. Finally getting down hands in front of my trail leg pocket consistently at A6 with much better clubhead position (relatively not as tipped out). I can really pressure the shaft through impact with good face control  from this position and stay in balance. Won my first one v one march 5&4 against a 4 hcp who routinely drives it 35-40 yards past me in the men's club match play . Frustrated him with some solid iron play and air tight putting.
    • Day 279 6-8  Worked on low point control skills work tonight. will be doing this for a few weeks. Tonight was just trying figure out how to get low point forward.  No ball.
    • Day 8 (Jun 8 26) - Stayed the drill but added two additional irons (7i, 8i and 9i) - using Divot Board and hard foam balls - focused on tempo and purposed pause at the top….noticing how open the club is marking the board when I try to kill it and how much more square (and better distance) when I focus on these keys.
