I know they exist, but has anyone here actually played a course with a Par 6?

I've never seen a course with such a long hole, probably because its pretty much pointlessly redundant.... but still... I'm curious.....

It is a 850yards from back tee , but still consider a par 5 . It should be a par 6 .

I have played a par 6. It's at Cherry Creek Golf Links in Riverhead, NY (on Long Island). The last hole is 644 yards from the tips (which, admittedly, doesn't sound all that far now that I think about it): http://www.cherrycreeklinks.com/cc-scorecard.html Solid course, though it's badly misnamed (it's not "links" at all). Not a whole lot of trees, sure, but it's surrounded on both sides by farmland, not a large body water. Long Island National isn't more than a mile away, and it's a much better design (though you could argue Cherry Creek is a better value). I thought the par 6 would feel gimmicky the first time I played it, but it's actually a genuinely solid hole. If you want to see it on Google Maps, type in "Cherry Creek Golf Links," and it's the hole immediately east of the driveway, and the green is just northeast of the clubhouse and parking lot.

644? The 650 yarder that I played today is listed as a Par 5.... Is there a going rule for yardage?

I used to play a course called El Rivino that had a 626 yard par 6 as the opening hole.  It was an interesting course with a nice mix of holes, but alas, it closed a few years ago.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Come on.... 850 yards?  And only par 5?  If you hit a 300 yard drive you still have a long par 5 left.  850 yards would be a par 7.

There's a hole at Brandywine Golf Club in Peninsula, Ohio - the 16th, which is now a par-5 but for a long time was played as a par 6. It's 575 yards, but it' a double-dogleg that has no opportunity for cutting any corners. It sits at the floor of a ravine, with heavy woods bordering the entire hole. The drive has to be about 240y to even see the next leg, then you have to hit it at least 250y to see the green. If you pull both those off, you're left with about a 100y clear shot to the green, but miss either the drive or the second and there's no way to hit the green.

Here's a pic from about 240 off the tee, what faces you on the 2nd shot -

In St. Louis, the old Forest Park layout had No. 9, a 630-yd. par 6 that ran south along Skinker Blvd. It played as a Par 6 until the 1960s, when the park trimmed it back to 585 yds. and made it a Par 5.

Starting in 2001, the old Forest Park 18 and Eisenhower 9 were completely redone into three 9-hole tracks of the new Probstein Course. For those playing Probstein, holes No. 2 and 3 of the hilly Redbud nine follow the trace of the old Par 6.

Other classic design touches the old Forest Park 18 featured: Back-to-back Par 3s (Nos. 2 and 3) and back-to-back Par 5s (Nos. 4 and 5).

Focus, connect and follow through!

Is black mountain a public course? That's about 2 hours from here or so, might shoot out to play it when I have extra time just out of curiosity... hehe
