Big Break: Greenbrier - Page 2

Derek looked like one of the better players.  He hit 2 absolutely pure shots into the green challenge....and over-clubbed twice.  A big mistake!!  Then he picked "THE SQUATCH" for the elimination challenge......."Squatch" was clutch....a real gamer.....easy 2-putt birdie. Seriously.....I think one of the best players lost today, which makes this show interesting.  You only have 4-5 swings..........................

On the very first swing of the competition, no less.

My big hope for this season is that one player doesn't run away from the rest. It was clear after the second episode of Atlantis that Marcela was the best by far, and the remaining episodes were only delaying the inevitable.

Yeah, although I've never really watched a whole season or anything, one thing that has struck me on the few episodes of past seasons I've watched here and there is that there is always a guy or two with a swing that looks goofy enough for me to tell myself "Hey, I could be on this show."

Then you realize these are all accomplished golfers (well, mostly I guess) and I wouldn't last 5 seconds.

If I was in that glass-break competition, I would have been like the guy who ended up throwing a ball at the target.  Then they would have had to take a commercial break DURING my turn because it would probably take me the entire pyramid of balls to hit anything.  (They could have put a wimp-out safety glass 10 feet in front of me with +1:00 on it and I would still probably choke)

Props to all of these contestants.

I was so annoyed that the DVR cut short, all because — seemingly — the GC felt the need to run that really long 'Thank You' commercial before the episode. And, it wasn't just the premiere. I tried to DVR a late re-air to catch it, and that same commercial played and cut the ep. short. You'd think in the days of DVR, networks would have this stuff figured out by now.

Lots of Ego in this season, its obvious.

I guess its a given.  In any sport, you do not hit the high end without some sort of chip on your shoulder.

I just wish the better players were more humble.  Then again, TV has a great way of taking things out of context and could even make Santa Claus look like a prick.

What they should do is put a tree in front of them with a 4" branch..  I can hit a 4" branch, I do it all the time when I'm not trying to!

just hit punch shots...they will be just the right height with something like a 6 or 7 iron.

Is that what you think they were all using?  It looked like most of them had less lofted clubs in their hands, like 4 irons maybe.

The most fascinating part of the whole drill to me was to see the different mentalities.  Most of them "hurried" but didn't rush, but a couple of them seemed to forget that there was a clock on them, and a couple (I believe Stuart was one) were just hacking at the ground with crazy speed, hardly aiming, breathing or anything.  You could also get a look into their thought process based on which target they used.

Along those same lines, you got a glimpse into their confidence/bravado/strategy when they did the second challenge and they had to pick their distances blindly.  I was really surprised only 2 of them picked the same distance twice.  That seemed like the smart move.

One said he was using a 5 iron.

He definitely looked like a stick to me. Obviously the format is such that anyone can win or lose at any time -- which is both entertaining and stupid at the same time, but I still like the show.

He kind of reminded me of Will Mackenzie.

Yea, I wish they would've told us what club these guys were using each time so we could compare and contrast. I feel like I would grab a 4-iron or something but then again, it probably wouldn't be too hard to figure out what club I would use after 10-15 minutes of practicing that shot on the range.

Certainly not saying I would break that glass under the pressure in a respectable time though.

I remember Kelly (think he was a Moe Norman student) from one of the past seasons used a driver to break the glass.

Sasquatch stepped up!  Pretty good first show.  I can't wait to see Liam in action.  Lots of 5SK/SnT swing pattern from what I saw in just the shots he was hitting into the glass!  Love it!!!

Me too.  I've got this one on DVR - first full season I will try and watch.  I know going in though the biggest problem I have with the show's format ... too much extracurricular activities and not enough golf.  Watching on DVR instead of live should help that though.

I think it's pretty awesome Mario B is his teacher.... he teaches about 30 seconds from my home course. I probably should get a lesson.

Yea, I guess any club could technically work for that challenge.

I can't remember who the guy was, but one contestant is from Brick, NJ which is like a stone's throw from me, so I'll probably have to be rooting for him -- hopefully he's not an idiot.

Speaking to Mike (Mvmac) - Mario is a great dude.  I really respect what Mike has to say - and if he endorses Mario... Then I'd say that wouldn't be a bad idea.  And it doesn't hurt that he is a certified 5SK instructor.  And you're a frequent TSTer - which pretty much has the 5SK gurus on here that you know a thing or two about the golf swing. c2_beer.gif
