I've been Playing Golf for: 1 year

My current handicap index or average score is: +40

My typical ball flight is: Slight pull (often shanking)

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: heel shots

Hi all, I know my swing is pretty bad but was hoping for some feedback. I tend to hit the heel on almost every shot and although have been taking lessons, I seem to fall back into this habit. Was just hoping to get some feedback on what could help, or any suggestions on any other aspects of my swing really.

Thx!

Joel

Do you have a face-on video?

You're falling back. Your head appears okay, but work on Key #2 is definitely in the cards at some point. Possibly starting with Key #1 improvements (you don't need to twist your head away to start your backswing, but it may also not be something that needs fixing, either - an FO video will help to decide this).

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

You have the makings of a good swing.  I see some good positions on the back swing.

1. As mentioned above, work on balance.  Practice swinging and holding your finish for 3 seconds.

2.  Feel like your chest covering the ground the ball until way after impact like Dustin Johnson.  (You're standing up through impact.

3. Feel like 85% of your weight is on your right foot on the back swing, and 98% is on the left leg at impact.

This would be a good start.  Post progress videos

Thank you both so much for the feedback, I really appreciate it. I currently am living in Israel for 3 years for work (originally from Ottawa, Canada) and since there are only 2 golf courses in the whole country it's pretty hard/expensive to get out. 9 holes at the cheapest course is 82$ cad! In any case, I will try your recommendations and try to swing more with my chest over the ball through impact, not immediately up and weight back. I'm also going to Ottawa next week for 2 weeks and was going to pick up a Kodak PlaySport ZX5 camera, which should be better for slow motion captures, so I'll post a Face-On video of my swing when I come back or maybe even while I'm in Canada, weather permitting. Actually now that I think about it, my brother in law just sent me a picture of his garage setup with golf mat and ball net, so I'll get it up here as soon as possible. One last note, my teacher in my last lesson strongly suggested I get my irons bent downwards 3-4 degrees as right now both at address and at impact the toe is up, and both teachers I have at the golf course tend to believe this has a strong impact on my ability to hit the center of the clubs. What is your take on the lie angle affecting heel shots? I have Callaway X-22 irons and at address there is definately a good 1/8th of an inch of clearance from the toe to the ground.... Thanks again for your comments! Joel

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi all, just got back from Canada and was able to get fitted. I need a 4-degree flatter lie angle amongst other small changes but

after taking video shots of my swing the master fitter did notice my hands are several inches further in front of me at impact than they are at address.

Above is a video at 1/5 speed of my swing from face-on as promised:

One thing that was pointed out recently was the fact that I release the clubface too early in my downswing and I'm having trouble flipping my wrists later in my swing...any pointers?

Thanks!

Joel

    • Agree. The next omission needs to be that ridiculous team concept. Nobody cares about a team when they really don’t represent anything except being a group of diminished morality and/or washed up pro golfers. Or wait, we’ve also got total nobodies who’ve accomplished nothing who now get a participation trophy! Doesn’t that sound invigorating!
    • LIV moving to 72 holes is a subtle admission that 54 holes was nothing but a joke all along.
    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
