Im pretty new to golf, and Im not very good right now. But luckily I do have some pretty good clubs to learn with. Currently the only wedges that I have are the PW(46*) and AW(50*) that came with my irons. Id like to get another real wedge or two but not sure what is a good one.

Everything in my bag, including my bag is Nike. Didnt really intend on being such a homer, but just has worked out that way...

so obviously Im looking at the SV Tour by Nike... but also the Callaway X-Tour caught my eye because of the "black head look"... also thought might be good idea to break up the Nike bandwagon... lol

so my question is, what does the AVERAGE golfer use/need as far as wedges go? Im not sure which degrees would be best for me... looking for some suggestions on which brand/model to get, and also which degrees... thanks

Many people, from pros to me (that's a huge gap!) like the Titleist Vokey wedges. I'm absolutely in love with my 52* and 58* - they're my life-preservers. Or, I guess, par-preservers. Find out if the store near you has a money-back guarantee. The store near me gives me 100% money back - in the form of store credit - within 90 days for any clubs I'm not satisfied with. I went through a number of hybrids, 3-woods, and drivers before settling. It's only the wedges that I loved first off, so I can't give good advice on what I liked or didn't. You have a 46* and a 50*, so I would suggest a 54* sand wedge to keep your gaps consistent. I used to play 46* and 55*, and nothing between, and let me tell you, you don't want a gap of over 6* in your bag if you can help it, especially not at our level

You can pick up a Cleveland 588 Gunmetal wedge in 56* for $69.99 right now (at any number of places). I tried one a couple of weeks ago and really loved it (and bought it). I haven't played with it yet (it's been really rainy in TX) but am hoping to get out tomorrow morning.

Demo as many wedges as you can, and pick the ones that give you the most confidence standing over the ball. If you already have 46 and 50, then I would suggest 56 and 60. (The 60 is a must, though.)

The 60 is a must, says the guy with an admittedly horrible short game?

I'm in the camp that believes the 60 is something best left out of the bags of most people with two-digit handicaps. It can cause more trouble than it's worth for many. There are exceptions, yes, but in general, stick with a 54 and 56 and learn to play that well. You can open them up quite a bit, too.

I don't know if i would say anyone with double digit handicaps should not have a 60. I'm pretty accurate with mine. I would say though that anyone with over like a 22 handicap should not really be using one. When my handicap was higher it just caused me more frustration than satisfaction. I would say just get a 54 or 56. Once you get good enough with it, you can even open the club a little to make it a 58 or so.

Good thing I didn't, then.

I don't know how people feel about non-name brand stuff, but I left my cobra wedge out on the course and needed a cheap replacement so I went to Ebay and stumbled on a clubmaker and thought I would give it a try... I love the wedge I just got (56*)! I will definitely be getting another (54* or 60*) and am going to consider a hybrid from them. While they do have ebay stuff, I would suggest going to their website and ordering because you can customize the length, grip, and shaft that way. Just a suggestion for people strapped for cash or those just getting into the game and want to try some wedge lofts before spending $100. The website is www.Redrivergolf.com .

I must be one of those exceptions then. Does having a bad short game disqualify me from having an opinion, and giving advice? When you play at my course, and realize how fast the greens are especially since it hasn't rained in a few weeks, you'll need a 60 to have any chance to stop the ball on the green. They can't hold my other wedges.

I used to use the 60 only for high lob shots when absolutely necessary, but it's becoming my go-to club within 80 yards. I have my share of mishits (most often I'll catch it super thin and the ball races off the other side), but it's definitely a stroke saver for me. I'm in the camp that...well, the more wedges and lofts in your bag, the better off you are. My chipping suffers when I'm 20 feet off the green. I have a problem with either leaving it short, or blading it off the other side. Anything over 20 yards doesn't give me trouble. Edit: Has anyone tried to flip the ball behind them with their 60? The best I've been able to do is pop the ball 20 feet into the air and straight back down in the same spot. It rolled down the hill and onto the fringe thereafter, so it sort of did what I wanted, but anyone have better luck?

Given your PW and AW distances, I'd suggest a 54 and 58. It maybe helpful when you're starting off to have some consistent gaps in your lofts. You don't need a 56 degree from the sand. Actually using a 54 out of the sand may help you learn to open the face a little more and learn how to hit true bunker shots. A 54 wedge is great for longer bunker shots and a 58 is great for shorter ones. As for approach shots, you'll have equal gaps and hopefully somewhat consistent gaps in yardages between each wedge.

I played some of the Nike forged wedges and liked them a lot. Cleveland is great too. Mizuno is overrated and overpriced. And you can't go wrong with a Vokey.

I do see a lot of people playing 60+ wedges, even some low handicappers, that don't use them efficiently. If you really need more loft open up the face of a 56 or 58. For higher handicappers, 60+ wedges are also harder to hit in my opinion.

My iron set also came with a 50 deg. gap wedge. I decided on a 54/58 wedge setup. Up to you but I would just look for a sand wedge initially, 54 or 56. This club will help with greenside bunkers and I don't think a lob wedge will do you any good at your current handicap. I lowered my handicap index by 12 in the past year with 11 clubs in my bag. Now I'm up to 12 clubs overall after buying the 54/58 wedges and removing a 56. Good luck.

I'd say 54/58 would be the way to go since you already have 46/50... but then again it is up to the player and like someone else mentioned, demo as much as you can because you're gonna be the one swinging the club.

Count me in the camp too. Obviously everyone is different but in general, for the mid/high handicapper I think a LW does more harm than good. I can't tell you how many times I've watched players pull out a LW and either chunk it or skull it over the green. I'm not trying to compare anyone, I just see many more bad shots than good. My 60 degree was the 4th wedge added to my bag and I'm still tinkering with different bounce options. If looking to add an extra wedge, and not knowing anything about an individuals game, I'd recommend a gap wedge (which you already have) over a lob wedge. Again, of course there are players with "higher" handicaps who can benefit from a 60 degree wedge, but then again there are various different ways to get to the same handicap. Also, the 60 degree isn't typically the type of club you just add to the bag and go out and get instant results. Gotta practice with it. I'd add a 54 or 56 to go with your 46 and 50 and master that one first before considering a LW.

well thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I landed a pretty sweet deal on the Callaways that I was originally looking at so I went ahead and grabbed them. So I now have:

Nike Slingshot PW 46*
Nike Slingshot AW 50*
Callaway X-Tour 54* - 13* bounce
Callaway X-Tour 60* - 11* bounce w/ PM grind and Mac Daddy grooves

can someone please tell me what the bounce degree is? These arent supposed to come in until Monday so I wont get to use them on Sunday when I golf, but Im excited to hit the range with them and try them out next week
