NYC, NJ and CT are in tough shape.  Been through this myself in the Blizzard of '78 in Mass.  It is very tough but you will get through it.

This is probably the worst storm we've seen here in the tri-state area.  Fortunately where I live damage was limited to wind and trees but on the south shore and north shore of Long Island there is widespread devastation.   Many people were just able to get into their homes again yesterday and the visuals and sounds were heart breaking.  It will be days if not weeks before gas and power are restored to the hardest hit areas and then these people will have to deal with the water damage to their homes.

This was a life changing storm, it will affect people for years and likely change the way people view NY in the future.  NY isn't the fortress we thought it was, subways, tunnels, hospitals, beaches, even Ground Zero, all were compromised by a Cat 1 hurricane.
