Hi everyone

I was just wondering what more I need in my bag. I’m fairly new to the game and have been purchasing some equipment and still have room for 2 more clubs. So let me tell you what’s in there:

Big Bertha irons (4-W)
Wilson x-31 SW (I would like to exchange this one for another wedge, but not a priority)
Heavenwood Hybrid 4H
Callaway X 460 Driver
Odyssey SRT 2 ball putter

What would be best to fill the gaps from my Driver to the 4 iron? Any suggestions?

Greetings from Iceland, Bjarni

All the best, Bird

I would think a higher number fairway wood would be a good fit.
Fig an 18 degree (4 wood) or 5 wood.

Hi Bjarni,

We have quite a bit in common... as you can see in my signature I use only 12 clubs and I share 8 of them with you.

I don't carry a fairway wood. The only shot I can't produce with my 12 club set is reaching the green in two on a long par 5... but at my current ability I feel any shot more than 220 yards is a high risk shot and I have no problem laying up with an iron and "hoping" to be on the green in 3.

Nothing wrong with playing less than a full 14 club bag, especially if you're fairly new to the game. I used only 11 clubs until a few weeks ago and lowered my handicap index by 13 in the past year. It really depends on what you feel comfortable swinging. Many people would probably add a 5 and 3 fairway wood, but you could also look at a 3 hybrid, 2 hybrid, 7 wood or 4 wood. Good luck.

I definatly think a 5 wood would be the best bet. Sometime it can be tough to hit for a beginner but it is definatly worth it.

Hi everyone

Well, before I make any recommendations on what to get to fill the gap, what gaps do you have? How far do you hit each club on average? (If you don't know for sure, hit 10 balls, take out the shortest and longest 2, and average the remainder out.)

Without knowing, I'd suggest a 3 wood. Unless your ball flight is low like mine, in which case a 5 wood is better.

I would suggest a 5-wood, just because 3-woods are much more difficult to hit. Once you feel your good enough for a 3-wood, fill that last spot.

A 5 Wood and 2 Hybrid will give similar results. If you love your Heavenwood, look into/experiment with a 1 (14*), 2 (17*), or 3 (20*). They're just about the same lofts as the standard woods these guys are recommending.

I disagree... If he isnt "good enough" to hit a 3-wood then why does he carry a driver? Right?

I played all of my high school golf without a driver, carded at least one round under par that I can remember and went somewhere in the neighborhood of 40-2 for my career. I would add a 3 and 5 wood and take out the driver. Quickest way to add strokes to a card... Poor drives.

Only ditch the driver if you have decent tempo and consistency with your swing. If it's not consistent through impact, the much smaller head of the 3 wood will cause much more erratic shots. Better to be long and in the trees than short and in the trees.

No real suggestion can be made until you post your average club distances.

Thanks for the replies.

With my 4 iron I can be fairly long of the tee. The markings on the courses I play are not very good but I guess I shoot up to 180-200 yards with my 4I and I love it. On the other hand not very consistent from the fairways when I’m having a bad day. The hybrid is my newest club and yesterday I took it to the range (had some slicing troubles with it) and with the bad markings on the driving range it was hard for me to see how far the ball flew. But after some work on my backswing I had some good shots. At least it gave me higher ball flight than my 4I and I guess a little bit further, I still have to get use to it.

If you would have a good golfer who would shoot his hybrid (4H) say, 200 yards how much further would he shoot with his 5 wood? Just give me a rough Idea. I like the Idea of getting a 5 wood and a 3 wood and just wondering what I would use my hybrid for. I don’t know why I bought it;)

I don’t know if I have the time next week but I really would like to do some measurements for my average club distance. Thanks again for the replies…….
