I voted conventional. I was recently shopping putters and tried several belly putters out of curiosity. They felt funny and, knowing the ban was being considered, I didn't look very hard.
I hope none of your buddies actually quit. I'm sure there were conversations on the Nineteenth Hole of clubs across the country and around the world where the threat was voiced to quit if the ban was passed. However, I suspect that the very vast majority of those folks will get a few lessons and stay with the game in the long run.
