Honestly it's not a choice I have to make often. Of all the courses I frequent there are only three par 5's I can reach in two because I don't carry a driver. If I can't get there with two 3w it's not happening. Though I typically play two similar shots on the longer par 5's before a short iron. But yeah the course layout plays a big part. As I mentioned before we have some par 5's where the lay up is the 1st or 2nd shot.

My go-no go yardage is around 240yds depending on the trouble around the green and how I am striking the ball that day. If I don't like it then I will layup to 100-120 yds.

Too many variables besides just being at the right yardage (230 yds or less for me). If I'm 90% certain I'll get up and down for a birdie (or a chance at eagle), I usually play my second to leave me around 120 yards for my third.
