Rory McIlroy walks off course at the Honda Classic - Page 2

He tweeted about it too. I can't get the stupid copy and paste on my phone to work or I would post it.

ESPN reports that no excuse was given moments after he withdrew.

Later, media sources quoted Rory as saying there was nothing physically wrong with him (which would mean no wisdom tooth pain), and that he was mentally in a bad place.

Now I'm hearing the golf channel says it was a wisdom tooth issue, but another poster says that may have been a misquote.

Either way, I'm going to assume Rory's first statement was the most transparent, and that even if he did bring up wisdom tooth pain, that is an attempt at spin/damage control.  Regardless, anybody with a source on it?

If I'm the poster you are referring to, I was just going for cheap laughs. Sorry if I was mistaken for knowledgeable on the issue 'cuz I ain't.

Rory is one of my favorite players but this is pretty classless. Camilo is still hanging in there.

Time to start rooting for Henley!

I bet he made an appointment to see his lawyer about getting out of this Nike Deal. Right after he sees his Dentist, of course...

He walked off claiming nothing was wrong except he was in a bad place mentally.  He later changed it and claimed his tooth started bothering him last night and he was taking Advil.  Today the pain was still there and he couldn't concentrate so he withdrew because he was becoming a distraction to those he was paired with.

He says at some point in the future the tooth will be removed, which makes no sense to me, why not go to the dentist today and get it dealt with.

Poor form. Rory takes a big hit in my personal ranking of character, and this is directly related to golf.

And he is supposed to play next week. If he isnt in a dentist chair right this second and shows up in Doral next week it will be in poor taste IMO.

And the PR agents start to scramble...

Thanks.

Also, Rory just tweeted the following:

"Thanks to all at the Honda.  A tough day was made impossible by severe tooth pain.  Tried desperately to defend but couldn't play on.  Gutted."

RRRrrelease the Cynics!!!

Yes the wisdom tooth excuse is garbage IMO.  He is getting stuck in his swing they were showing yesterday and he is a mess mentally right now.  Nike curse.  Haha.

I had impacted wisdom teeth at about the same age Rory is now. Damned painful. You have to wait ages for the antibiotics to clear up the infection before the dentist can take out the wisdom tooth (cut into pieces, in situ, then extracted).

No idea if this is what he's suffering from, but if he has wisdom tooth problems and is waiting for one to be extracted, that would be my guess based on personal experience.

The pain from the infected tooth sockets and infected gum tissue over the teeth was really unpleasant and nagging...I recall it put me in a foul mood.

Unless it's all a ruse and he needs a little time to soul search over which perfectly healthy tooth he will have to have ripped out to validate the story.

LOL

I've got about 2 hours until a consult with my oral surgeon for a throbbing wisdom tooth ... it is pretty brutal, but I'm still doing MY job with a really sore tooth.   AND have a 7 AM tee time saturday morning to play simulator golf (l can't get an appt until next tuesday to get it pulled).      It's a crock - Rory is totally making excuses in a damage control effort.

If he had said immediately that he was quitting because of a toothache, we'd still be riding him about being a sissy.  It's winter and many of us are still under a stoppage of golf, and as such are excessively cranky.

I for one will give him the benefit of the doubt until it's shown otherwise.  And while I like him, I'm not a McIlroy fan boy.

A lot of people have had this level of tooth pain before.  I did once before needing an emergency root canal, and I could barely watch TV without wincing, let alone do any activity.  If he was having this level of pain, I imagine it would have shown itself on the course, no?

I can understand aches being a reason to leave the course, but his comment right after walking off was a bit suspicious. Personally I don't care a whole lot, but if he didn't have that much tooth issues, it's bad form.

i read the tweet mentioning his bad tooth.  The funny thing is that the immediately preceding tweet from last night mentions how he was enjoying his dinner.  Maybe he was eating on one side.
