Driver Problem ... please help

Hi All...

I am in the market for a new driver... I am hoping someone can help....

A few days a go I picked up an R1 and hit it 20 yards longer than my current driver... both on the range and on a launch monitor... But before spending 300 quid on a driver I went to a fitter for some advise . He gave me an Orka driver with a flatline UST stiff shaft to see how I like the head....and it seemed to hit it well (nothing special but the shaft launches it too high for me).... Now I have a few options...

1) Buy the R1? It looked good, felt OK and go a long way.....but only having one shaft option.. it put questions in my mine if it is the best shaft for me (£300)

2) Buy the R1? get it reshafted at a later date by the fitter? (£400 to £450)

3) Suggested by the fitter get the old 910 D3 head (I head that I like) from ebay and get the fitter to shaft it (£200 to £250)

4) Go with the Orka Driver.. (supply by the fitter) and have the right shaft put in (£200)

 

My head is saying there can't be that much difference in the head, as they are all conforming and it is all down to the shaft.

My heart is saying R1! New toys with all the bits I can play with and the resell value will be much higher.

Am I being a golf snob? Could someone beat some sense into me please?

The new Cleveland Classic Custom. Personally I think its the best feeling head, very low spin, and 4 high end shaft options as stock shafts. Can't go wrong.

Is that different to last years Cleveland classic? I loved the idea of that club, but the ones I saw I couldn't believe how tacky and cheap they felt, rough edges on the sole, I got no impression of a wooden club at all from it.

Depends on your budget.

 

You probably will get no money for the Orka head at resale, so you may want to keep the shaft.

 

TM does have custom shaft options, at least in the US. You might investigate those options in the UK

 

Wait a few months for a used R1 club. Or have a friend in the US be your shopper as there will be more here in USED bins.

 

Bite the bullet and get what you want - the R1 and have it fitted later for a shaft - but at least you'll play it 2-4 years and be happy.

 

If budget is an issue - get a used R1 and reshaft it.

The new ones are all black and they are adjustable. Last years stock shaft in the 290 was horrible(very soft). This year your stock shaft options are a Fubuki Tour 53, Matrix 6M3 Black tie, and Myasaki JDL 5 and 6.

Don't buy a club for it's resale value, buy the one you want. I vote for the R1. If you average it out, it is less than a quid a day. You can't afford not to get it!

If it makes you feel any better, my fitter doesn't give me a break off the price when I buy the club and an aftermarket shaft ... I must remind him that street price on the US R1 is $349 at many places, and then he adds in the full price aftermarket shaft if he doesn't get a break on his wholesale price. He makes money for his expertise ... in club and shaft.

 

Still waiting for the next TM "innovation." It will probably be a real face angle adjustment in the hosel; and then after that, they'll finally go to a cup face. What does one call "innovation" that is 5-7 years behind?

 

Still, the R1 is on the radar - Not the longest as compared to Stage 2, but the overall package is better - good feel, better control, forgiving, and very good distance. I think the Stage 2 is more muted as to sound.

 

Shifting Driver OEM's, don't know why the XHot Driver does not have a cup face when the Fairways do ... Oh, I do ... it's called cost.
