next handicap update, my handicap index will be below 3, which puts me eligible to attempt to qualify for the mid-am. Is there any reason why I shouldn't play in the qualifying?

I have never played in a USGA event before and i have no illusions of grandeur of actually having a chance. But i would like some experience of playing competitive golf at a high level.

So for those more experienced, is there any reason I shouldn't try to qualify?

I plan to play if my handicap gets low enough (and my age gets high enough). Go attempt to qualify; in the worst case, you play some golf at a great course with some of the best amateurs who chose against a professional golf career.

Go for it, when i eventually get my handicapp down to 5.4 or lower i will qualify for the maryland amatuer and maryland open. both of these are MSGA(maryland state golf association) a branch of the USGA. Good luck and dont be tame about, go out like there like you deserve to be there.
