Is Tiger Woods on the slide? For me he looks more vulnerable right now than at almost any time in his career; he just doesn't look as invincible as he once did. I believe the next 18 months will be very important for him. If he were to go on an extended spell without winning majors what would that do to his motivation?

Yes, three wins this year, 1, 1, 2, 2, 12 in the last five majors...

Still, he had a bad week, and I'd say he hasn't had his A game yet this year. I'm starting to wonder if the move to Hank Haney was wise. He's stronger and smarter, and it's not like he's getting old already. His putting is suspect, and when that's working, he's hitting it all over the lot with irons . Still, he could easily win one, two, three, or more times this year. He did win seven tournaments in a row at one point at the end of last year and this year, and last year was after missing the cut at the U.S. Open.

yes his swing didn't look good. I think it's more of not trusting his new course management, he still wants to bomb the driver and take his chances with his wedges instead of playing the courses smarter and hitting by the flag for his birdies. just never seemed relaxed to follow thru with his swing.

It'll be fun to see how he plays the next couple of events. It seems he kicks it up a notch following a poor (relatively) showing at a major. I do think that once the new-ness of having a baby around wears off a little he'll be more focused. He usually spends a couples weeks across the pond to prepare, and relax, before the Open but he didn't do that this year so he could stay at home.

I think most players still fear him somewhat...remember, his bad years would be a career year for most of them.

I don't know if I'd say 3 wins and a bunch of runner ups is on the slide but I will agree that he looks as beatable as he has been in a long time. He really hasn't dominated all year and when he's in contention I haven't gotten that feeling like he was just going to run away with it like he has before. I don't really get into all the A game crap, you are what you are and right now he's struggling a little (for Tiger standards). Perhaps Rory was right... Still, this isn't the first time he hasn't dominated, he's still very young, so I have no doubt he will go on a typical Tiger run in the near future. Plus think about how difficult it must be to maintain that level. I'm not sold on Haney either. Also, whether you want to consider them factors or not but his personal life has been busy. The dude has had other things going on. Just the facts of life, everyone has to deal with them but I'm just saying he's got other things on his mind than golf, golf and golf.

I think the other golfers are catching up to him. I am sure most anybody would take what he has done this year and the last couple of years in a heartbeat

Keep it on the short grass.

he has a 5 week old and I can tell you that I didn't want to do much else the first 5 weeks after we had our daughter. Not to mention going overseas for over a week. Late nights and he may not even tell you whether the baby is completely healthy or not...could have reflux or something and keeping his mind on other things. We'll see what he does at the PGA and Bridgestone coming up. He is a little off and was wild this week, but he still hung in there. Didn't make many putts.

Could Tiger's problems of late (if you can even call them problems) be a tempo problem? I think his desire to kill the ball might be his problem. It is easy (as Zinger pointed out) to see when his tempo gets quick.

Don't get me wrong. Tiger will continue to be one of the world's great players, I'm sure of that.

To use an automobile analogy, during the Masters and US Open he looked like a guy that was pressing the pedal flat to the floor but the car just wasn't going to go fast enough to overtake the guy in front. He tried everything but it just didn't happen. During The Open he just looked off the pace.

Maintaining the motivation and desire necessary to dominate any sport for 10 years the way Tiger has done takes phenomenal focus and stamina. Eventually complacency and boredom kick in and once you start to loose momentum its very difficult to get back to the top. I'm not sure if Tiger's quite at that stage of his career yet but who knows?

  • 2 months later...
I'd say not 'on-the-slide':
* 13th Major victory at PGA Championship
* 60th PGA Tour victory at the BMW Championship
* 61st PGA Tour victory at Coca-Cola Championship
(above making him inaugral winner of Fed-Ex Cup)
* 16 starts on Tour in 2007, his adjusted score average was 67.79, (matching his own record set in 2000).

I'm backing him to win two Majors in 2008. The only guys who can push him, IMO, are:
Michelson - but he chokes at Majors.
Els - still on career-hiatus.
Singh - on-the-slide.

Nope he's definitely not sliding.

I agree, 2008 will be a huge year for him. I think boredom may kick in when he surpasses 18 Majors. Not right away, but down the road. I predict he gets bored when he's 48 years old, has 29 majors, 190 tour wins and 8 Billion in the bank, no 16 Billion in the bank.

Nobody is immune to rhythm as the July posts in here were picking up on. His swing is so airtight right now it would take something like Rosie O Donnell having a massive inside his swing vacuum to disrupt it.

Now there's a mental image for ya.

Swing = Stacked and On Plane when possible.

I'd say

The post is from July. None of the things you listed had happened then.

It's a little disingenuous to look back and answer an old question as if it was a current question.
