Background

-Been playing for about 10 years but only actually started playing often and practicing about 3 months ago

-Before that it was play every 6 months

-Currently averaging mid 90s

Here is a video of my swing also: http://thesandtrap.com/t/66595/my-swing-mr-smell-good

I just had my first golf lesson and I definitely think it was helpful.  The instructor used a video camera to record my swings and we analyzed it after each one in slow motion and compared it to the swings of pro players.  Here were the main things I need to work on:

  • Keeping my left arm straight on the backswing
  • Don't bring the club too far back (past parallel) (see bullet point above)
  • Keeping left arm straight at impact (could be because I was standing too close to the ball)
  • I need to use my legs/hips more

When looking at Tiger's swing, his right knee is moving way before mine does and his hips start to go through ahead of his hands.  I am a pretty strong guy and my instructor said people with upper body strength tend to not use enough leg drive sometimes.  Keeping my left arm straight is a pretty simple thing to work on but I'm not sure how to generate more leg and hip power in my swing.  Are there drills that will help me with this? Thanks in advance!

Here's a video of a drill Luke Donald does. Looks silly and kind of like he's imitating Charles Barkley, but he's trying to get the same sensation you're looking for I think.

Haha great comparison to Charles Barkley.  It definitely looks like he's try to focus on that as well as his position at impact.  Pretty much everything he's doing there is what I need to work on.

Does anyone have any comments about really driving off the right knee (if you are right handed) and how they learned to incorporate their legs more?

    • Day 35, June 8. Before leaving for work this morning (yes, I'm posting this quite late relative to the practice), I spent 15 minutes practicing at home, into a net.  This time, it was primarily 9-iron (full swings), with some UW (full and half) and a few 6-iron.
    • Day 73: just some mirror work today. Working on feels for being open and getting the front shoulder down.
    • I'm liking this. Finally getting down hands in front of my trail leg pocket consistently at A6 with much better clubhead position (relatively not as tipped out). I can really pressure the shaft through impact with good face control  from this position and stay in balance. Won my first one v one march 5&4 against a 4 hcp who routinely drives it 35-40 yards past me in the men's club match play . Frustrated him with some solid iron play and air tight putting.
    • Day 279 6-8  Worked on low point control skills work tonight. will be doing this for a few weeks. Tonight was just trying figure out how to get low point forward.  No ball.
