I'm currently using the Rocketballz regular flex driver and am finding that my swing speed is too fast for this shaft. The stock Matrix Ozik shaft is very whippy and I think it's time to upgrade to a stiff shaft. (No matter how many times I say stiff shaft it sounds funny).

Anyway, are there any you would suggest? I don't want to spend a boatload on it so my budget is under a hundred bucks. My driver averages distances between 240 and 270 and I have a slight slice I fight 25% of the time. Tested out on the machine and I was looking at 135-145 ball speed on the simulator.

Any suggestions for aftermarket shafts? Hard to judge the stick without using it and I just don't know the major differences between the brands. I really like the Fujikura FUEL shaft that's on the Cobra Amp Cell, so that's all I got so far..

Thanks!

There are so many shafts out there, a lot of them can very well suit you.  The question is to figure out why your current shaft isn't working for you.  Other than being too whippy, could it also be too light?  Do you like the current overall length?  Those factors are something to think and not just finding a shaft to fit your swing speed.

You mentioned about a slight slice you're fighting.  25% of the time is enough to take a look into whats going on.  Are you just opening up your hips too early, coming over the top, ..etc  How does the transition feel to you so far?

What I did was I took my driver into a Golf Town here in city and compared statistics to 4 different drivers. Since I had a regular flex I compared them all to Stiff flex because the whippy'ness if you wanna call it was mostly on my down swing. I tried the 913 D2, PING G25, Cobra Amp Cell and the R1. I produced almost the same shots with all drivers except the Cobra Amp Cell. The slice was partly due to my downswing and once I was able to correct that it disappeared...

Although I'm a firm believer that the club is not the key, the Amp Cell is really helping my drives. The forgiveness on mishits are amazingingly good. E9 technology for the win.

Thanks for your reply man!

Shaft recomendations is a tough subject. Two people who hit the driver the same distance can have very differnt shafts due to swing speeds, tempo and all sorts of other differences. Saying that, the Prolaunch Red with Speed Coat is a great shaft for a great price. Then consider having the shaft pured. There is a lot of good information on shaft selection on golfclubshaftreview.com

Hope this helps

The original RBZ shafts have a reputation for being too soft.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Maybe look at Arthur Extreme shafts from golf works. They play a bit stiff so you might look at regular in a 6.0 or a stiff in the 5.0. Prolaunch Blue Or Proforce V2 Both good options.

I second the pro force V2. A great shaft for the price- I played it in 3 of my past drivers. Very stable!

Thanks all.

I jumped the gun and got a new driver that fit my game more but I'm going to test it out at the range tomorrow. If it isn't what I thought I'll be returning it and going with the Proforce v2, thanks all for the input!

I just bought a new driver 2 weeks ago. I tried numerous drivers with numerous different shafts and got a combination of what I could afford plus what gave me the best numbers and consistency on the trackman my local golf shop has. I suggest going in when you are legit ready to buy and having someone help you out doing the same.

I really wanted this Matrix Ozark Black Tie 7M3 HD shaft but they wanted an extra 225 with my Nike driver, lol. WAYYY out of my comfort zone so I just stuck with the a Tour shaft on my Performance driver head. Much better than the stock Performance driver shaft and didn't cost me a thing. Well, that's a lie, it cost me about 3 weeks of waiting, because the shaft is on Backorder until June 7th.

You basically did what I should've originally done lol. I went and got the UST Proforce V2, 77g stiff shaft and hit it today... beautiful. It's EXACTLY what I wanted. It's a bit lower ball flight than I'm used to but I actually like it better. Like you said, I can't believe how much some of those other shafts are.. for the price of the Proforce ($63 Cdn) it's a steal.

Waiting to get it in the mail? Update on the proforce v2 shaft.... Awesome. Best tweak I've made in years.

Nah, well, kind of. I bought it from my local golf shop and they're waiting for it from Nike so technically, yes. Haha.

Great to hear! Gives me hope with what I am soon going to have in my possession!

    • Thank you, currently I only had the 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 irons in the bag. I was never finding myself in a situation to use the 4 and 5 so I dropped those a while ago. The 60W is what I've been practicing with the most in the back yard, but that's only with short chipping. I don't think I've ever practiced hitting my wedges at 80% - 100% apart from yesterday. Maybe I should be doing that more. Generally I would be using a 9 iron if I was out about 75 yards or so. I am not really sure I understand your mention of the 60W and 3H. Aren't these going to be giving me completely different results? Unfortunately I am not able to adjust the loft on the hybrids I have. I looked into the Shot Scope H4 you suggested and this seems really neat and handy, however I am struggling to understand how it works. Am I correct in assuming it doesn't track the ball distance until you hit the ball a second time? Say I drive from the tee and walk up to my ball, tag the next club and hit the ball. Is it at this point when I tag my next club while standing next to my ball that is knows the distance? Thank you, I am going to give the local shop a call and check their prices and see what they can offer.
    • Do you know what their handicaps are? The handicap system isn't perfect and given the higher variance from higher handicaps, I think low handicap players would be expected to win maybe 60% of their matches? I'm not exactly sure what that number is and it will vary with the handicap difference, but if they're generally very low handicaps, then they might be at 60% likely to win a game. Given it's 16 vs 16, that's a lot of games to win. If it's 60%, then that's around an 80% chance that they'll win a given match. At 80% chance of winning, 21 wins in a row is about 1 in 108 times. Pretty unlikely, but not unheard of. It's pretty sensitive to what that individual win percentage is too. If it's 65%, then 21 wins is about 1 in 9. If it's 55%, then 21 wins is 1 in about 5,700. Clearly it's not as simple as this because that win likelihood is going to change match to match as they play lower handicap teams or higher handicap teams, but I don't think it's a "yes they're cheating" thing at all.
    • I'll be honest, the only reason the 2 iron was in my bag is because I tend to hit the ball into the tree's fairly often. And I was using it to help me keep the ball very low to get out of the tree's while avoiding getting much loft to hit branches. I guess I can drop the 3H as well. Would it be wise to give a higher loft fairway wood a try as well, something like a 26 degree? I believe there is only one golf shop where I live that has a golf simulator and trainer. I see they offer free fitting with a purchase from the fitter. I'll have to check how much they charge without a purchase, I've read a few stories about fitters on this forum that just wanted to sell the person the most expensive clubs and that kind of deters me a bit. They do offer lessons as well. I'll give them a call and ask them a bit more about these services. Thank you!
    • Here is a description of all the programs:  Programs & Training Programs and Training TheStack is a personal swing-speed trainer for golfers. Initially, each golfer is piloted through a series of swing speed tests to generate a force-velocity profile of their current swing. Qualitative data is... I think cruiser is meant for maintaining speed and flex can do more than that. But I'm just basing that on the descriptions that I linked.
    • Both @DaveP043 and I play in our interclub matches every year, and have been team Captains as well.  There are always a few courses, mine is one, that win a lot of matches (we've won twice in the last 7 years), and we've been labeled as sandbaggers.  However, I really think that our course was rated too low (our greens just never seemed to get factored in enough), and thus our Handicaps were always a stroke or maybe 2 above, what they would've been if the course was rated higher.  And then when we went and played other courses, their slope and rating were much higher than ours, and sometimes I would get a 2 or 3 stroke bump on top of that.  It was definitely an advantage.  However, this past year, our course was rated again and the slope has gone up, so we'll see if we continue to have the same benefit.  Season starts this Sunday for us.
