Wedge set?

Are you better off playing with 3-4 matching wedges as opposed to different brands of wedges?

Right now im playing with a gap wedge from my mizuno mx-100 iron set, a 56 degree mizuno r series, and a 60 degree ping

I was thinking about getting a set of wedges like 3 vokeys (52, 56, 60) but if it isnt going to make much of a difference id rather now throw the money down on them (college student)

So how much of an advantage is there to playing the same type of wedges? And also, is a spin milled vokey wedge really that much better than other wedges when it comes to getting the ball to check and what not?

There has to be some advantages with playing with 3 wedges of the same brand.  I would think that this is similar to why you have all irons of the same brand.  You will get more consistent yardage differences between wedges of the same brand, but if your distance gaps are already covered with the wedges that you have there is really no need to shell out the money for the new clubs.

The advantage may be that all of your wedges feel and perform the same but I wouldnt make that big of a deal out of it.

I've done it matching and individual. The advantage is that you have a more consistent distance gaps from wedge to wedge if they match.

Some people do both. With Titleist AP1 or AP2 irons, they use the set's P (PW) and W (GW), and get a SW and LW from elsewhere. (APs have no SW or LW).

Some people like Vokeys, others don't. And remember that your ball type has a big influence on greenside spin.

Swingweight can be different from one brand to another.

I personally prefer my three wedges (50, 54 and 58) to be of same brand. In one set all Vokeys, in another set all Clevelands. Looks nicer too.

My PW is from my set of Mizuno's, my GW is a Vokey, and my SW and LW are matching Mizunos. I have each of them for specific reasons. For example, my old SW and LW were Clevelands, but I got a new LW because my Cleveland didn't have a low enough bounce, and I could find a Cleveland that did. I got the SW because I loved the LW. I have the GW because it has a very straight leading edge, and I use it as a utility wedge out of bad lies from 80-120 yards.

That's a really long was to say, no your wedges don't need to match. There's virtually no advantage to them matching as long as the yardage gaps are correct and you like all of your wedges.

I used to play with a guy who was a low single digit handicapper whose irons were made up of clubs from three different sets. It worked for him.

Well, if you're a college student, don't drop the dollars on Vokeys right now. You can always get them later on in life if you still drool at the very thought of them.

I am a proponent of matching wedges though. I used to have a non-matching blade GW between my matching PW and SW, and it was a total disaster... cavity-back, blade, cavity-back [in that order] is not a good set up :).

But you don't have to drop a ton of money on matching wedges. Rock Bottom Golf (rockbottomgolf.com) always has quality clubs, and that's where I got my set. Some of their wedge sets are like 50-100 dollars... They're not top-of-the-line brands, but they'll do you just fine until you get a big-boy paycheck ;)

I am on my third set of Watson wedges, I'm just too tight to pony up $300 for 3 wedges when the Watson sticks work for me for $100. Best value way to get 3 matched up wedges, you might want to flip the plasticky grips is all

Yeaaaaah... +1 for the Watsons. There's a new set now, and they actually look really awesome. I personally think the grips are just fine

Maybe they are better now, the first ones I had were very slim and pretty slip- ie lacking in grip

It's a personal issue. I personally carry only 3 wedges PW from my Mizuno MP59 set a 52 GW and 58 SW/LW Taylormade ATV.

I do have the same shafts in them to get the same feel in the swing.

If your doing well with your current setup, do not change it.

My Edels were pricey, but I would buy them all over again in a second. Having fitted wedges of one type is one of the the greatest golf purchases I have ever made.

Where did you go for your fitting? I'm assuming you didn't have it done in New Brunswick?

Well mine are only about 2 years old... I'm not saying they're amazing but no better or worse than what's on my other clubs.

1" shortened matching Vokeys.  For me personally I like the brand and color to match.  Makes me more confident on important shots (every shot is important I know) but some are more important than others.

They look good in the bag.  I actually took out the pitching wedge from my Titleist 755's and replaced it with a 48* Vokey to match my other wedges.

No, I spend a lot of time down south, family has summer homes in Florida and South Carolina, got them at Old Palm Golf Course in Florida. Fitters name was Mark.

When i'm down there in august, I may get fitted for one of their putters.
