Callaway is taking pre-orders on their new woods, Optiforce that offer the ability to change the loft and face angle by using the same sleeve featured in the Titleist 91X line of woods.  There are two versions of the driver, 440cc, 460cc.  Callaway execs claim the Optiforce is very close to the X-Hot numbers on launch monitors in terms of spin but the lighter head can produce club head speeds that are up to 4mph faster than the X-Hot.

Mid-season release of a new line seems strange for Callaway but they may be taking a page out of the TM marketing book and using the Optiforce to compete with the R1 Black.  Callaway is enjoying great sales this year, especially compared to the last few years, mostly due to the X-Hot line popularity.

I saw this the other day ... and worry that they are making a mistake.  One of the reasons why I feel like they are enjoying success this year isn't simply because of the xhot itself (which I have and love) but because they got rid of the 9000 other lines they had for awhile.  They had no identity with all those choices, I felt.

Anyways, hopefully this works out for them ... I like Callaway! :)

Me too, I switched to their 3Deep as my driver using their X-Hot 16* hybrid.  I'm not sure they needed a third line of woods as it really blurs the lines of who the target market is for each line.

I'm guessing because of their patent settlement with Titleist they wanted to release a club with the same adjustment sleeve that Titleist uses this year and it wasn't ready at the beginning of the season.

Maybe next year they will consolidate the RFE and Optiforce into 1 line with the new sleeve.

I know exactly what you mean. There was BB454, X, Hyper X, Diablo Edge, Diablo Octane, Razr Hawk, FT, Razr, etc. I just got the mid-year released Tour Authentic Razr Fit from last season and it is already on the archive page! Of course with the new model comes some great deals on the old ones, not that they are old by any means.

I don't think I am going to get 4 mph more either...The DOT and TA are so close together with the TA just bringing it in much tighter, I can't see how any newer will help (unless you are not fit correctly) as it is all maxed out.

Tommy Gainey shot a 62 (-8) at Greenbrier today with the new Callaway FT-Optiforce in the bag.  Interesting that the pro's are gaming a club designed for people looking for higher club head speeds.
