Broke 90. life is good.

I have been playing for a year and broke 100 for the first time a few weeks ago. I had a plan that I wood play the same course three or four times the last week in Oct, my 50th birthday and try and break 90. Well now I don't have to wait, Fu%$#^in broke 90 last night at a course here in Monterey where I'm working for a few days. Scored an 89.

I have had alot of help from the golfers on this site, Thanks...

Just to add to the above post. No Mulligans, took my penalties and stuck like glue to the rules of Golf as I understand them.

This. I broke 90 once with an 88, but I used a mulligan so I don't actually count it. Still looking for the elusive sub 90 score...

Without that 2-shot penalty, it'd have been an 89. But my first true sub-90 (an 87) felt all the better because of it. I'm sure you'll get there.

Thanks. Yeah I'm not concerned. It's not uncommon for me to shoot between 90-92. I think if I have a good day, I can not only shoot 80's, but it'll be low-to-mid...not just an 89 but closer to an 84-85.

How often do you have a good day? I ask because your handicap of 22 does not reflect an 84-85 type score, even if averaged with many 90-92(s). Seems like your handicap should be lower.

Congrats!  I break 90 from time to time - and it feels good every time (even on the par 70 course I play a lot).  If you shoot 89, it is the equivalent of all bogeys and a par.  This is good golf in my opinion.  Hopefully many more to come.

Congrats OP, sub 90 is a big milestone. For me it unlocked something and I was able to play better and trend down fairly quick. No doubt it's the result of hard work

In a different thread he copped to having an unofficial handicap. I think he mentioned not posting front or back 9 scores because he typically scores bad on one side of a particular course. Pretty sure it's in the thread about combined scores.

My index is legit and my scores are usually mid 80's at 12 but bad days can get into the 90's. But because I am mostly consistent those never get into my ten best. Last time I looked at my stats my average over par was 14.1, roughly 43 a side. When I was in the 15-17 range I shot a lot of low 90's mixed with some substantially higher scores.

But a lot of it depends on the rating/slope of the courses you play most. That's why I bailed on my former home course. The low rating had my differentials higher than the actual number of strokes. I found it odd because my scores didn't balloon when I played higher rated courses. In my case my index was higher than I was capable of playing. So it can happen.

Congrats!!! Not common for the average golfer taking penalties and playing it down etc.  That's a big deal, go have a cold one on me and be proud! (But only until your next tee time) :P

Never. Haha.

The handicap is not official. And if I started shooting 84-85, it would go down quite a bit.

I just need one day where it's all clicking. I've been averaging around 30 putts a round, and my FIR lately has been about 70% lately. But my GIR staying so low (

Next week I'm breaking 90. Maybe even as soon as Sunday. It will happen.

Anyway, I'm done derailing your thread. Congrats, and here's to hoping sub 80s are on the horizon for you as well!!!

Congratulations. I know exactly how hard this is to do. I have yet to do it on my home course, and I barely did this on two others. It's really hard, and you broke the barrier.

Funny thing is when I broke 100, I felt that I played really well and I was thinking how difficult it would be to reach 90. Yesterday after playing my personal best I didn't feel like I played all that well. I only hit two fairways and was pushing my irons all day.

Yes, I thought it was just a psychological barrier on my home course. Which mostly is the problem. However, I think the OP broke it on the same course he's been working on all this time. That's a really good milestone for him. I wish I could do it on my home course.

My first time breaking 90 (for real, not the 89+2 mentioned above), I didn't realize it until I added up the scorecard. Birdie at #17, par at #18 for an 87. I'm sure I could have found two bogies in my bag if I had known where I stood on the 17th tee :-)

Congrats dude, I just broke 90 for the first time in May so I know how great it feels. It really is a great feeling scoring sub 90 versus 100+, haha.

First time playing the course. It is an easy course, we played from the blues, I think the rating was 114.

      Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.

      Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.

      Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
