Originally I was thinking of using .58 core grips over .60 butt shafts to get a thicker grip but the .58 core grips usually run about 7 grams or so heavier. Per the Hirekogolf grip calculator, a layer of build up tape runs .0035" so wrapped around the shaft it would reflect a .007" overall buildup. I have some old 2" wide masking tape and doubled over it measures .0095" so obviously not all buildup tapes are created equal.

Knowing there will be a final two-way tape added for adhesion, how many layers of build up tape can be put on a shaft before it gets "spongy" or not advisable? Thanks.

Grips can handle quite a few wraps of tape. BUT, the more tape you put under it, the more you stretch the grip and speed up how fast it wears out.

Also, TST golfers have suggested that certain grips can take more tape than others. But, I can't remember what brands these were.
