It's the same type of golf, but the field isn't as strong. Beating Brandon Grace in a playoff isn't really the type of performance that will win you a British Open. Did he peak too soon, so to speak or is this the shot in the arm that will get him to a win?

Why do they call golf "golf"?  Because all the other four letter words were taken.

He didn't just beat Branden Grace.

How can you criticise a win and say it " isn't really the type of performance that will win you a British Open"?

What can you ask the man to do except beat whoever shows up? He did it.

Also, Branden Grace is one of the hottest players in the world. He won 4 times on the European Tour in 2012.

This is about as ridiculous as saying that Tiger's wins are minimised because he "picks and chooses" his events.

Phil has as much chance as anybody in the field, and a lot more because he knows how to play the ball with imagination and enjoys this kind of golf.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Great poll question. I am a bit superstitious in this regard, because I think it hurts him. Phil is a bit different as he has won before and then won a major, but for most golfers not named Tiger it usually means they don't win the next week at the major. Phil was not one of my favorites going in, and this didn't change that. I would love to see him win it after the heartbreak at the US Open.

This event was a tune-up for the British and Phil is firing on all 8 cylinders now. His confidence will be high so hopefully he contends. This win only helps in preparing him for the Open.

3-putt from 15 feet on 18 when he needs par to win probably sums up how the Scottish reflects on Phil's chances at Muirfield.

A win never hurts and Phil's playing well, but I think he's peaked too soon. It's hard to win two weeks in a row, especially when that second win would be a major you've never won before. It doesn't mean I'm rooting for him any less than I normally would though.

How can it NOT help him? Aside from the actual win, he's just played 4 competitive rounds on a Scottish links in conditions which are likely to be very similar to Muirfield. I'd say that puts him in a better place than many of his contemporaries who, I'd suggest, might have been better served by also being in the Scottish Open field last week.

He goes into it on a high note with a win, instead of just thinking about how he blew the US open. Definitely helps him...also proves that he can play the kind of golf that will be needed next weekend.

I doubt he wins at Muirfield. His record in The Open is not strong and IMO Castle Stuart is a different type of links course than many at least from what I watched on TV. There didn't seem to be as many fairway bunkers which dictate strategy off of the tee on a links course. Plus, this was not as strong a field as you will see at Muirfield.

This is a bit off topic, but did anyone else find the coverage really boring? I actually changed the channel and didn't come back to it. Not sure if it's the euro announcers or what, but I haven't switched off a golf tournament...well...I can't remember ever doing it.

I predict that it will help him every bit as much as victory has assisted past Scottish Open Champions in conquering the British Open the next week - we all know how many times there's been a back-to-back winner...  well, uhhmmm... that number would be zero.  So historically, Phancy Phil just guaranteed a lack of success.

I caught the last few holes and the playoff on Sunday and agreed that the coverage seemed dull, not just from the low light toward the end of the day.

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
