I'm an iron fan, but I don't go as far as a 1 iron. I got an iron utility club at 21º that I absolutely love. I've never been a huge fan of hybrids and use irons off the tee quite frequently.

what explains that is using a driver off the tees, just because the others did, instead of playing smart with irons and playing in the short grass. be to be fair, I haven't played but 1 round in over 1.5 yrs(and that was a scramble)... i wont play again until i know where the balls going(most of the time). I've worn out 2 nets, 3 mats, and a grassless patch in my yard. I hit balls every day, regardless of weather.(ever hit @ 5 AM on a 20* mornin?..it'll wake ye up!!). I ranged my yardage @ the local range last week...I'm almost ready to hit the course for an updated(and smarter played) round for a new HC.

Talk is pretty cheap on the internet.

They are exceptionally hard to hit off the fairway. The hardest.

You're kidding yourself.

Maybe it's just my nike irons, but aren't most 3 irons 21°? I had to comment, just thought it was unusual you referred to what I consider a 3i as a utility iron.

And to reference the OP, the only time I would ever carry a 1 iron is if I was playing a thunderstorm. God can't even hit that!...Some famous golfer said that one time, not sure who.

Because it is a utility iron.

fwiw, I carry a one iron. With a bit of practice, I found I can hit it fairly decently most of the time. Off the tee, not so difficult,  fairway takes a lot more concentration but it can be done. I posted awhile back about "improving your game with a one iron".  I got one off EBAY for $9.00 to add to my set of Hogan Edges.  I noticed recently it would appear that "driving irons" are making a come back (or at least, you see more ads for them.) They are essentially one irons with a  broader sole.

and if I am not mistaken, this was only two weeks after his famous "quip".

Golfer Lee Trevino was struck by lightning once: on June 27, 1975, during the Western Open in Chicago. Fellow player Jerry Heard was struck by lightning during the same tournament. Trevino recovered after hospitalization but suffered permanent spinal injuries that have affected his flexibility.

They most certainly are not.

They are usually hollow with a mass of weight at the bottom.

They're not really "Utility" irons, they're more utility "irons". Like Shorty said, they're hollow and they're simply iron shaped hybrids.

i'd say they are not un hit-able , but as a reference to how often they get used in the PGA Tour, i can only think of one guy who has used a 1-iron and that was Tiger Woods a few years ago I believe at the British Open when the weather got really windy and he was using the 1-iron to hit a low shot to cut threw the wind...

It is what it is

there is no doubt that advances in club technology has all but made the one iron a relic. As to what professionals on the PGA tour are using has no bearing on what I like to do.  I also enjoy hitting persimmons once in awhile.

I am qualified to post my input here because I actually bought an 1 iron and tried it out.  The thing is so hard to hit for length or accuracy.   I gave up as soon as I tried it.   You are much, much better off with any wood, or hybrid club.   Of course, if you are a scratch golfer and got left behind the modern club technology progress, I can see how you can stick with 1 iron.

I frequently play with Wilson Staffs and Joe Powell persimmon. My "vintage bag" includes a butter knife 1-iron. I also have a set of Titleist DCI's which has a 1 iron. I can hit them both ok-relatively speaking- especially off the tee, and I enjoy doing so. The Wilson is the classic butter knife and the DCI has a fairly deep cavity and almost plays like a hybrid. I can hit my Callaway 20* 3 hybrid, though, about the same distance as either of my 1 irons with a good bit more ease and consistency, especially off the fairway. Off the tee In the wind , there may be some advantage to the 1 iron because of the trajectory.
