im going on a 15 hour plane right next week and might read a book or 4...

i just started playing golf last summer but am addicted now and im sure theres some good golf books out there.

please recommend your top 3 or so. im not sure if i want a purely instructional book or just some nice golf anecdotes by famous golfers. hopefully there are some books that are a nice mixture of both?

the one book that came to mind was tiger's book "how i play" or something along those lines. i saw it at a proshop not too long ago and i thumbed through it and it seemed interesting. any opinions on this book?

David Pelz Short Game Bible by David Pelz (all of his books are good)
Every Shot Must Have a Purpose by Pia Nilsson et al. (or golf is not a game of perfect if you prefer Bob Rotella. I have read and enjoy both, but you said top three)
Golf My Way by Jack Nicklaus

Ben Hogan's Five Lessons.

5 chapters, easy read, simple/precise instruction on a game that is complicatied to put into words. Best part is, it was written in 1957, just after his real peak and breakthrough season in 1953. Lessons from THE MAN of the day.

I've been meaning to pick up Zen Golf too. Another good mental book is Golf For Enlightenment by Deepak Chopra.

Harvey Penick's Little Red Book

It's one of the best selling golf books of all time for a reason. There is a little bit of unneeded nostalgia (which is still interesting none the less), but the information that Penick dispenses on both the mental and physical aspects of the game keep me coming back to it whenever I hit a rut in my game.

i have the Tiger Woods book "How I play golf" thats the one your talkinga bout, it was 12 bucks on sale and it has coloured pictures and diagrams almost every page, ive read the whole thing and it is simply amazing. Id really recommend it. It has a couple stories of him also back in his college days and such.

Mental: Anything by Bob Rotella but try Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect

Entertainment: Anything by John Feinstein. His new one is Tales from Q-School, but A Good Walk Spoiled, The Majors and The Open are also great.

I'll agree with Harvey Pennicks Little Red Book, and add Who's Your Caddy by Rick Reilly. Funny, funny book......especially the chapter about John Daly.

I really like the Golf Instruction Manual by Steve Newell. It's hardcover and loaded with full-color pictures and suggested practice drills.

I also like Hogan's Five Lessons. However, from personal experience, there is a tendency after reading this book to try and do things to make your swing look just like Hogan's. I made that mistake a few months ago and ended up contorting my body into very unnatural feeling positions to try and mimick Hogan's swing.

I really enjoyed Chuck Hogan's "Learning Golf" and Butch Harmon's "4 Cornerstones of Winning Golf" when I was beginning. I still read passages on occasion. I have been singing praises of Bob Rotella's "Golf is Not a Game of Perfect" for a month now, and I suggest you read it. Others will second this. I just started reading Arnold Palmer's "Playing by the Rules", which I'm finding very interesting. Various rules and decisions, and even some confessions of rules he's broken and rules you and your buddies have broken.
