Help Me Stop Casting

I have struggled with one terrible problem: I tend to cast my driver, and rather than creating the greatest clubhead speed at impact, I create it behind the ball before I hit it. The result, of course, is less distance. Any suggestions how I can get the feel of not casting? I need help!

My problem wasn't so much casting but that I was releasing too early, if that makes sense.

The drill that's worked wonders for me is putting a ball about a foot ahead of my left foot (for a right-handed golfer) and trying to hit it. The only way you can hit a ball that far forward is to delay your release and not cast.

Even on the course, I will pick an intermmediate target along the target line and about a foot ahead of my left foot and try to hit it with my swing.

Casting, early release, leakage are all the same thing.

Casting is more of a reaction to a poor coil. The upper body lacks tension with the lower body at the top of the back swing so the brain recruits the arms to start the downward motion for power resulting in an early release. If you can work on a tight rotated coiled back swing with no sway, it is easier to start the downswing with the lower body which drops the arms down before the shoulders rotate. Aim to time the lower body move while the shoulders are still turning back and you will create more hinge and hinge save (lag) in the downswing. Attempting to fix the problem from the top, rarely works because the root cause is always there and you are too "position focused" to swing freely through the ball. Find an old tree and a hatchet and chop it a few times and then notice how your lower body pivot and coil does all the work. Your upper body simply reacts to the lower. Try to gain this feeling in your golf swing.

You're either decellerating your armswing, tensing up, or both.

Be wary of advice from someone with a hcp much over 2, but you asked, so I'll give you my advice.

A pro gave me a lesson where I was casting a little, and he gave me a swing thought that banished this disease for me almost instantly.

As you swing back and cock your wrists, you will form an angle between your RIGHT forearm and wrist. As you swing down, try to hit the ball while maintaining this angle, never releasing it. Centrifugal force will end up forcing you to release it, but if you concentrate on maintaining that angle as long as possible, you can't cast the club from the top.

If this doesn't improve your problem, then see a pro, because maybe you're not casting, but just think you are...

Best way I know of helping to get rid of early release is taking a wedge and hitting balls one handed, right and left hand only.

Put the ball in the middle of your stance and hit balls with your leading hand only, then hit some with your trailing hand only. There is no way to hit solid crisp shots with only one hand if your hand is not in front of the ball at impact. If you release too early you will either hit right behind the ball or you will hit them really thin.
