Is this selection of club types good for a beginner?

Driver (10.5) (which I can usually hit straight but only between 150-200 yards - on the driving range, so I'm not sure if it bounces/rolls a bit more after)

Should I get a 5 wood or a 4/5H or will these do for now?

This seems like a reasonable set, be prepared to fine tune your club selection as you improve. :-)). Btw, the 5W is more or less the same as a 3H in distance. I prefer the weight of the 3H, because I like heavier clubs in general.

sounds good. i would learn to hit those clubs first and try to fill in the gaps later.

some people like woods and some people like hybrids, and eventually you'll have to fill that gap between 3 wood and 5 iron (a 40ish yard gap for me personally.)

a lot of times, especially early on, you'll find you score better if you hit two 8 irons down the fairway instead of trying to reach in one shot.

You might go with a 4H to fill the 3W-5i gap. In the early going, get some clubs that fit you and learn how to use them.

You can always choke up a half-inch on both the 3W and 4H to shave off a little extra yardage. (You don't really need 14 clubs when you're starting out).

If you haven't already bought the 3W, you might also test out a 4W. Many golfers can hit a 4W better than a 3W.

Hold off on buying one of your clubs for a season, and spend the money on a couple of lessons. You be a lot happier when your playing and you wont miss the club.

I'm gonna keep playing a little more and then maybe get lessons as well. Although I only want to play golf for fun really, not competitively so I'm not sure if there's any point to lessons, but I may consider it depending how I get on.

Although... is it weird that I find the driver easier to hit than a wedge or an iron? Maybe I should get an instructor to work on that?

That's not weird, driver is easier to "hit" for a beginner. The qualifier is that it is NOT easy to hit any club well. I spent a good 3 years, with not so great lessons, swinging the wrong way. Later on, I tried many things on my own primarily because the lessons I got early on were not good. I had been taking lessons with a really good coach for the past 6 months, and it has changed everything around. I had been more serious in the last 3 months because I was recovering from injuries over the last year. The main thing is that my new swing is better for my body. If you learn to swing the correct way, you can avoid injuries. My main reason for golfing is for exercise, so it is important that I can swing a club every day. Getting good lessons is important to be able to avoid getting hurt.
