Swallowing My Pride...

Ok, I'm about ready to swallow my pride and trade in my trusty old forged blades for a combo set. I've been asking myself: Do I really need a forged blade in the 4i? Am I really going to work the 3i left or right?

The answer is probably: no. I'm not qualifying for a tour anytime soon, so why not make the game a little easier on myself, right?

So my questions for the forum:

Does this sound like reasonable logic?

and

What combo sets are out there? I've looked into the Hogan Apex FTX, thought about a 690mb/cb set up...thinking of waiting for the 735...

Any suggestions out there? Help.

Seems resonable to me.

I love my Miznuo 30/32 combo set. Mizuno will make a combo set of any irons you want, 33's, 37's, 32's, 30's, 23's, etc. For the quality and price Mizuno is hard to beat.

Bridgestone has a combo set (J33B) that has has good reviews. Nike has their new set too

If you're partial to Titleist then you might as well wait for the 735's and try them. They actually look similar to the Bridgestones

Have fun looking and trying all the new sets out!

I've always been a fan of the look of Mizuno's. I've only shyed away b/c they're standard set up is rather flat. I'm taller and play at least a few degrees upright in just about any set.

How is Mizuno about adjusting their lie angle? Can they go 3-4deg upright?

Mizunos are very easy to bend. As for combos, I really like the Mac or Bridgestone combo sets. The Titleist one probably won't be out to till next year.

MacGregor had a combo set that they discontinued last year. Might be able to find a set on closeout somewhere. Very sharp-looking with 3-6 cavity backs and 7-PW musclebacks, all chromed and classic. I played with a guy recently who had a set and loved them. They had the VIP and Tourney names on them. Might be a cost-efficient way to go.

I went even further with the pride killing decision.. From blades to combo's, from combo's to "forgiving" Don't regret it. If you're not a full-time golfer there is no reason, not to take advantage of technology and make the game easier and more enjoyable for yourself. My LT2's preform great, very forgiving with a lot of response on mishits. TP Combo's are gone forever.
Good luck and don't be shy about playing "easy" equipment. If your swing is good enough - you'll be able to work the ball anyway.

I appreciate all the advice....I stopped by my local golf shop today and hit some clubs.

I've ruled out the Hogan FTX's, not nearly as sweet as some others. I particularly liked the new Mizuno MP-32's which I'm a little surprised about. I still like Titleist as well. In either case, I'm looking at doing a mixed set of irons (690mb/cd or MP32/30 or something like it).

Of couse, I can just stick with what i have.....but what fun is that?

Anyone out there hit the new Wilson Fi5's?

I really like my two-year-old Mizuno MP33 which in the meantime became their "signature set" and will be available for quite some time. The lie angle is indeed quite flat and I got mine with a lie of +2 degrees even though I'm not that tall.

I can't tell from their website...

Does anyone know which Mizuno's match up with the MP-30's? The MP -33's or MP-37's?

There really isn't a "match" for the irons, it's which ever works best for you. The great thing about Mizuno is you can make up your own combo, like the MX23 3-4 iron, MP30 5-6, MP32 7-P - Double-check but I believe you can pay an upgrade charge and include their Fli-Hi hybrid iron.

The combo set I have is MP30 4-6 iron and MP32 7-P. I didn't get a 3 iron because I get more use and versatility out the two hybrids I have (listed below)

I mentioned a lot of other good clubs to try but forgot to mention the Callaway X-Tours, they are also a great set. Mizuno's have a great feel, which they're know for but also are a great value.

Does anyone have any info on a Mizuon combo set of MP 30 and 37/33 instead of the 32's?

The guys at my local shop say the 32's go with the 30's but I prefer the look of the 37/30 combo.

Any incite out there?

Thanks in advance.

Does anyone have any info on a Mizuon combo set of MP 30 and 37/33 instead of the 32's?

I've seen that this thread is quite old and Putt4doh does not appear to have changed from his forged blades yet? So I thought I'd add a few thoughts anyway. I played the MP30's for 2 years and went from a 14hcp to a 10hcp. Had the MP32's for nearly a year and I'm now off 8. When I was fitted for the32's at the UK Mizuno Hq, the pro fitter explained that one of the main reasons that Mizuno brought out the 32's was that the pro's did not like the MP30's in the longer irons as the trajectory was considered on the low side. Apparently the 30's are generally considered a low ball flight cavity.

Personally I find the 32's easier to hit than the 30's go figure..... Following recent major swing changes in an effort to improve further....... the game is struggling, you know the story one step back to go two steps forward.... I'll get there but it will take some time..... Back to the thread topic, I'm also considering a combo set and was wondering how the MP32's compare against the Titleist 735CM's..... ? I'm also looking at trying a players cavity. Any thoughts on the Ping I5's...... ? 1st post here and looking for a positive response. Thanks

Just got rid of my Titleist 670 forged 2-pw irons this week and went with the Mizuno MP-60 3-pw and glad I did. May have to re-shft with graphite due to injuries and medical problems. Good luck with new sticks as this game is much more fun now that my ego has taken a back seat to realism.

Now you'll have to change your name to "MP60forged"?

Hi Putt4doh,
just looking at your bag makeup I suspect that your shafts are the culprits holding you back. If you have trouble with your long irons install a softer shaft. It worked for Nicklaus.Daly swings a far softer shaft in his driver than you think.

No kidding! Maybe I should have gone with "Constant Rotating Equipment"

By the way, got your email and we will hook up for a round of golf soon. Any others in the Phoenix area or coming to Phoenix please contact me at proglfr1@cox.net and let's all get together for a round of golf and a face to face so we know who's behind the name. Mike

    • Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
