Hello all,

I joined the fourms because its looks like a great community and I want to start taking my golf game more seriously.  I am from Baltimore, MD and shoot in the low 100s which is frusterating but always keeps me coming back in hopes of a better round.

Does anyone have an recommendations for some baltimore area instructors? I think its time to make a serious investment into my game and get a good instructor that will help me impove my game over the short term, and hopefully in the long term picture too.

I look forward to reading a lot of helpful advice and great golf discussion on the forums.

Thanks,

Sean

welcome - can't help you with local instructors, but I can give you some advice that helped me DRAMATICALLY.   There are so many online resources available today - it doesn't take much to learn what a golf swing should consist of.   If you go on youtube.com and search "stack and tilt" swing ... you will find some great information that will help you.     Its one of hte most popular teaching methods today & is designed to simplify the golf swing.      I can give you three things that helped me get from shooting in the 100s to high 80's in less than two years:

1. Swing easy - so many high hcp golfers have such a fast, out of control snappy backswing.    Bring it back slowly & in control, then accelerate on your downswing.

2. Keep the head centered throughout swing.    Dont' sway your head backwards on the back swing.    It's called a center pivot swing.

3. Shift your weight slightly forward onto your front leg on the downswing - leaning back on your back leg will promote a slice.

I lied, the fourth is probably the most important (to me at least, apparently some on this board disagree) ... keep your head DOWN (when they say always look at the golf ball - I mean really stare it down)  ... worst thing you can do is lift your head before impact anticipating the ball flight.

Good luck

John

not quite in baltimore, but i really liked the pro John at Nighthawk off of route 3. he's not a stack and tilt teacher, but i took some good lessons from him.

i would also recommend the video lessons you can get from evolvr. saved me a lot of money and really helped my game be more consistent season to season.

    • I kind of like this interpretation especially if you think about it the unplayable rule would probably put you in a better spot.  using back on the line releief.
    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
