When I tee off with a driver or a wood I get the club out of my bag, take practice swings until it feels right, stand back behind the ball and put my club down until it aims at my target. I then move my feet until they face towards my target and I then take my shot. Also if I do a bad shot I take another practice swing after my shot. If there is no one behind me I sometimes drop another ball in the same position and hit it for practice and they normally end up on the green...lol.

When I tee off with irons I do the same but when I am aiming I make sure that I have got the correct club for the shot.

What are your pre shot routines?

  1. Tee up the ball
  2. step away and bunch up sleeves at shoulders to make sure that my manly man muscles are showing
  3. Raise the club that I'm hitting, find a target in the distance and find a spot near my ball that corresponds with that target (this lets me see wither or not I hit the ball where I wanted to or not)
  4. Hit the club twice on the ground
  5. Check and recheck my grip to make sure that it's right
  6. Step to the tee
  7. Hit a long, straight ball that blazes down the fairway, landing softly 290 yards out.
  8. Repeat

Looks quite long here but actually takes no time at all on the course. Its become a habitual thing with me.

1. Two practice swings next to the ball.
2. Spin the club in my hand.
3. Waggle the club.
4. Hit the ball.
Simple, and I do it the same every time.

3. Approach the ball from a 45 degree angle to starting line
4. Set club with right hand and make sure clubface, ball and aiming point line up.

I actually did a video on my pre-shot routine. There are reasons for each one of my steps and I don't think enough people plan this out.

Equipment, Setup, Finish, Balance, and Relax. All equal in importance and all dependent on each other. They are the cornerstones of a good golf swing.

1. Take two practice swigs right next to the ball
2. step behind it, pick a target far away, and an 'intermidate' target
3. take one waggle, get my feet right, and swing..

On feel shots like 50 yards and in, including chips/putts, I don't do this. I just take 3-4 practice swings to get the feel.

Uuumm, okay. Why?

I know how to make a proper swing, what I don't need to do is cloud my feeble brain with practice swings that I will then evaluate and "fix". What I need to do is let my swing react to the target.

Stand behind ball and visualize shot.
Step up to ball, make two practice swings.
Address ball
Make sure alignment is all good
Waggle a couple of times
Swing

On short pitches and chips I will take as many practice swings as it takes to get the feel right.

Where I play, they are very serious about eliminating slow play. You are expected to finish in under 3 hours and 53 minutes. Many of the posters on this thread would never make it.

1. Take a couple of easy practice swings next to the ball to loosen up my muscles
2. Stand directly behind the ball and "visualize" my shot
3. Approach the ball and set my feet
4. Take a deep breath and clear my mind of all the bullshit
5. One last look at the target
6. Swing

Same routine before every single shot except pitch shots and other "feel" shots. for those particular shots I take a couple of extra practice swings to make sure that my club isn't grabbing too much grass.

Its better to make a good pre-shot routine, then to not make one and hit the ball into the woods cause your not comfortable and then spend time looking for the ball in the woods instead of spending the extra 12 seconds setting up your shot. I agree with you some can be long but a good one is crucial to good golf.

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
