I used to go golfing quite often when I was younger and was pretty good for my age, but that was a good ten years ago so I don't pretend to know what I'm talking about now. I'm interested in getting back into the game and am getting a set of clubs as a gift. My options have been narrowed to two sets from different pro shops in my area, each around $400. The first set is Wilson Deep Red, including 1, 3, and 5 woods, two hybrids, 5-9 irons, PW, SW, LW, and putter. The second set is Adams Tight Lies, with 1,3, and 5 woods, 4-9 irons, PW, SW, and putter.

Obviously the Wilson set comes with more clubs (14 as opposed to 12), which is a plus for me because even though it will probably be a while before I get to the point where I'm using all of the clubs, I'm a broke college kid and don't plan on adding to my bag anytime soon. I also like the design of the Wilson bag more (it has more pockets, tee holders, more comfortable padding, etc).

It sounds like it should be an easy choice, but from my limited understanding Adams seems to have a better name (which I admit I'm a sucker for) and I don't know what differences in quality there may be. Any advice I'd be able to get from you guys, as a neutral party, would be greatly appreciated. Here are a couple of links that a quick google on the sets brought up, for reference:

Sorry for the overly-long post and thanks in advance!

I would choose neither, but if I was forced would I choose the wilson set. Hybrids are in my mind more omportant then FW.

But why not buy a set in pieces?

I would choose the Wilson set out of them. Definately looks better deal. But surely you can get better than that for $400?

I do still have my old clubs, and would definately use them for a bit while getting back into the game... if they weren't a couple of feet too short. Needless to say I've grown some since my golfing days.

Ha it's not too reassuring getting these "neither" answers. I was under the impression that it'd be hard to build a decent set of clubs (bag included) for around $400 without getting a prepackaged one such as these, but I'm open to any suggestions.

Does anyone have any experience with any of these clubs? I keep going back and forth between them, seeming to lean mostly towards the Wilsons, but I just don't want to end up buying a set of cruddy clubs.

I just got my irons, driver, wedge off of ebay.

irons: $190 driver: $85 wedge: $40 It shouldn't be too hard to keep a whole set under 400 dollars. You'd definitely get more bang for your buck if you went the ebay route.

What goals do you have with your golf?

If you "only" are going to golf twice a month - buy whatever.

But if you are planning to improve and play alot buy the "cheapest" thing you can - because in less than a year you are going to get a new driver and a new putter and new irons.

Why not try this set as a "cheap"-set http://rockbottomgolf.com/07wilftshivmrhst.html

I also think that buying a driver without testing it is insane, is the shaft to soft or to stiff?? Is the sound it makes hideous?

Now to the only club I think you should spend as much as you have to,
The Putter!!! Go to a local shop and try every putter they have and buy the one that feels best no matter what the price is.

Do you have a golf galaxy near you? they usually have a nice asortment of lightly used gear. If you get into golf you will have wasted your money on the all in one deals.

my first set was an all in one set - it was a set of Ram memorial. i paid 100 bucks for it and after a month of use the head of my 5 iron flew off at the range. The driver was so whippy you could go fly fishing with it, the fairway woods were so big that it was like hitting a driver off the deck. the paint on the putter chipped off, and the hybrid weighed about the same as a cinder block......

needless to say i wasted 100 bucks - i did manage to sell this set on craigslist for 50 bucks - so i lost 50... i think i played with this set for a little over a month before i bought new clubs...

i just kept hitting the used racks at golfsmith, golf galaxy, and this awesome shop on long island that has a ton of used stuff...

Im sure you can find a very good set of clubs for under 400 bucks and get some very ood stuff if you dont mind playing used.. I saw a set of Cobra oversize (pretty old) for 80 bucks at golf galaxy near my house.. they were in awesome shape and just needed a regrip...

Good luck to you

I think Wilson are the clubs that have been used to win the most number of majors in golf. Also Harrington won the Open this year playing wilson. Adams clubs have had success through Tom Watson's senior career but can't think of any other players who use them.

The Adams is nice, my friend has that set. What’s the price though? That’d be a good set for under $400. The only missing piece is a hybrid, but the fariway wood it comes with is pretty tight.
