Hey Guys -

Question!

Lately, now that summer is over and everyone is back to normal work hours (read: holidays are over sadly!) I've been having a harder time finding people to play golf with. I've been starting to think about braving the course and playing a solo round . I am totally one of those people who goes to the movies alone all the time and I am used to eating alone in restaurants while travelling for work - that said, I've never golfed alone.

It's kind of a scary thought.

What do you think? Is it time I suck it up and give it a try? I feel like it would be a great way to really focus on my game and not feel pressured by the others I usually golf with.

Thoughts?

C.

Do it, you will probably enjoy it.  I love when it is just me and the course out there.  I play this way each morning before work.

I tend to play a lot better when I play alone ! It helps you really focus and you will notice a lot of things about your game and the course your playing that you normally wouldn't notice ! Good luck

Yep I find that as well.  You are much more "tuned" in.

All this being said, very good golfers(not me) are able to be "tuned" in no matter how many people are around them. :-)

I go solo all the time.  Two results -

1 - you get to play at your pace, and have that quiet and easy round.  I always play better.

2 - you get matched up with new people and it's usually a great time.

Unless you have a regular crew to play with, I find looking for playing partners to be tedious, anyway.  this way, I just go whenever I have time and feel like it.

Also, a solo player can get in even on medium busy days, I rarely make a reservation and can show up and just get on.

I enjoy golfing alone, but I don't like being paired up at the course with much better golfers.  Kind of tough being by far the worst in the group, and I fret about holding people up if I have to look for balls and such.  A downside to solo golf is getting behind a foursome or something like that.  That can lead to a lot of waiting between shots.

Thanks!

I was thinking I may go first thing in the morning - my course is quiet then this time of year, so I won't feel as self-conscious alone!

Haha, I wouldn't compare it to eating lunch alone.  I love walking 9 holes by myself but I'd rather not sit at a table for an hour across from no one.  It's nice every once in awhile to just enjoy playing your game and not having to deal with all the formalities that come with being in a foursome.

I have points in time where I like to golf by myself, but on the whole I prefer to golf with someone.  My eye sight isn't what it used to be, so I like having a second set of eyes that can help me see where my ball went.  But I do find, there are times when I like the solitude of playing a round solo, I don't have to help look for balls, or watch someone's ball, or wait on them to putt, so it has it's merits.  I've also found that when playing solo, I will catch up to a group that I will join and have a good time, get to meet some new people that way.

Don't want to steal your topic, but I also have a pet peeve about playing solo.  Good golf etiquette says you let faster groups play through, but if you play as a single on a busy day don't expect groups to let you play through. IMHO, just because you are a single doesn't give the right to get to play through.

I generally prefer to play with pals, but do enjoy playing alone as well. Golf Solo is better than Golf NoNo. A solo thing I like that I haven't done in a while is to get out on a non-busy time and play 2-3 balls hitting different clubs and shots to work on some things and know the course better. Fortunately where I play, most slower groups will let a faster playing single through. Obviously on those opportunities, I would not play multiple balls.

Agree with that bottom part completely, if I come up on a foursome I'll hit an extra shot and mess around on the greens so I don't put pressure on them to play faster or let me go through.  Plus I've never been on a course and my goal be to get off as fast as possible :-D
