I consider myself a bogie golfer. I have recently joined a club and needed to establish a handicap to participate in club matches. Finally got enough rounds to post and it says 12! I did shoot 1 round of 84, but I also shot a 99. I'm not making any money at 12! Course is a 73.6/137

Sounds right to me.  With this course rating (very difficult), if half of your score average was 89, it translates into 12 handicap index.

First it matters how many scores you have returned.  The chart below shows what scores are used in the formula.  If you only have 5 or 6 scores, then only the lowest score is used.  As you return more scores, that changes until you get to 20, when the formula uses the lowest 10 of your last 20.  Also keep in mind that your handicap reflects your scoring potential, not your average.

Makes a lot more sense. I had never seen that chart before. Only posted 7 rounds so that should c rep up a bit as I post more scores. I think?

Yes, but it will always be the lowest scores which will be used.  If that 84 is unusual, then as other higher scores are joined with it, it will have less effect.  But it is going to be there until it is the 21st oldest score, at which point it will drop off the list.

If it makes you feel any better, you actual Course Handicap when you play that course will be 15.  But everyone's will be a little elevated and the caps that are higher than yours will be even more elevated.
