Just had the best range session of my life, learning a bunch about my swing after a long slump. I've had this happen before but went right back to where I was sometimes. What should I do to make sure I improve from there and don't loose anything.

Having a 5.9 index, you already have been quite successful on the golf course. I can only offer you the same advice that I would give my high school JV golf team.....

Return to the range tomorrow and try to repeat what you did today.  Often times if you go right to the course, you will do exactly what your posting indicated, "(I) went right back to where I was."

Then after you have successfully repeated the good parts of your range session, try to take it to the course, but don't worry about your score.  Concentrate on the swing that you found at the range.  The score should take care of itself.

Best wishes.

Keep at doing the same thing over and over again. Your old habits have so many more reps than what you want to do. Incremental change is tough in golf. Its tedious, there are no quick fixes.

What do I do after a good round?  It partially depends on the day of the week.   if it's the weekend........I go home, grill a big thick steak to medium-rare,  and drink a few beers afterwards.............

Don't you know that Murphy's law dictates ... if you have a good range session, your next round will be bad?   Skip the next round. :-D

The best thing you can do is realize that you will have your ups and downs.  Thats the funny thing about golf: even the pros never completely figure it out.  My advice would be to have a few beers to celebrate a good round/range session and enjoy a victory.  Chances are golf is going to break your heart the next time out.

Write it down. Review it before your next practice session/round.

@nick1998bunker write it down like @phan52 mentioned.  And mention it on the boards or to a buddy.   When I make a breakthrough or have a slump I write about it in my little golf blog thread here on the site.  Helps me to remember how to correct little problems that may pop up here and there.

Also @David in FL nothing reinforces muscle memory like red meat :-D

I was thinking along the lines of Buckeyenut for an actual round, but for a range session, I think trying to visualize what you did at the range and apply it to specific holes on your home course might be best.

Along the same line....when I shot scratch for the first time I got home and poured 2 fingers of Johnny Walker Black and sat back and relished it because there was no doubt my next round would be 85-90.

The appetite definitely introduces incentive to do well the next round :-)

Well I followed up with a fairly good session and then today everything I struggled at I did very well but I could not catch the irons solid. Which was something I was doing well. It seems like every time I have a new problem so it's hat to get better

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
