All this talk about playing golf as a single made me think of this topic.  Have you ever played through a single?   I have more than a few times.  lol   .....some instances were completely different situations.

Yes.   Usually, the guy is practicing with 3 - 4 balls and did not want anyone pressuring his "practice" session.

Now that I think about it I've let other singles play through. Twice this year I was working towards personal best scores late in the round and didn't want the distraction of trying to make nice with someone. Slowing it down has a way of keeping me focused. The opposite of wanting to GTFO when I am playing bad, which is most of the time.

I've both played through singles and let singles play through.

Never really thought about it until I saw this thread but I've also let two groups of four play through when I was only a single. I just wasn't in the mood that day to stay ahead of the 12:30 game where they all had their own carts and all play like a bat out of hell. On that day they were done before 2:30.

When I play with them instead of in front of them I slow them down to a reasonable pace (to their chagrin).

LOL..yes, I've run into what I consider three categories of single golfers that I play through........

1...the I'm just practicing guy...also can be a disguise for the anti-social guy

2...the I'm really slow guy

3...the I'm anti-social guy

Either way, it doesn't bother me if there is open course ahead and they wave me though as soon as they see me barreling down on them........If I close in fast on a wide open course, I never ask to pair up..  Most notice how fast I come from behind and quickly wave me through....if they don't, I drive right around them and play a "makeup" hole later..

Yes and it's usually a terrified beginner.

The terrified beginner is a frequent situation.  Also, some fairly old (and slow) players have asked me to proceed.  One such gentleman waved me through because his eyesight was so bad he was struggling to find almost every shot.  I insisted on joining him and became his seeing eye golfer.

I have played through usually when I have a cart, and have let people play through when I don't. Last round I let 2 guys play through and still finished in a little under 4 hours.

I was thinking the same thing......  Even if a player is walking, it shouldn't take more than 3hrs-3yrs 15 minutes as a single.  I admit that some courses will take longer than others depending on how spread out the course is......

On weather or not to pair up....it depends on the situation.  If there is traffic ahead and nowhere to go, I always pair up.   If I can plainly see the single is playing slow and there is open course ahead...I play through.

Once in a while I try to play a serious round solo, but I go out fairly regularly as a single with the intent of practicing.  I've played through a couple of other singles that were going slower than me when I am being serious.  When practicing, I don't generally simply work my way around playing multiple balls, but am more inclined to pick "trouble shots" to practice as I work my way around, and I'll also spend extra time practicing lag putts, etc.  If someone comes up from behind, I let 'em through, but I don't really go that slow, even with the practicing.  More often, I am following along behind another group and the practice shots simply give me the time needed not to be standing around waiting on them.

At the risk of derailing the thread, I need to point out that introverts are not antisocial, we just don't always want/need to be around other people. So I'm sure you've played through antisocial people and I'm equally sure some of them just wanted to be alone for a while.

I had a twosome and a threesome let me play through on my last round.  That was refreshing, the previous 2 times I played a round solo I got stuck behind a foursome and the douchebags didn't let me through.
