Just watching Phil Mickelson playing in the CIMB Classic, I notice that he is not using his modified driver AKA the Frankenwood. I don't get it, why would you stop using a club that you could control, and helped you win both The Scottish Open and The British Open, and then take it out of your bag? Mike

At the President's Cup he was playing a SLDR driver that he spray painted black.  Not sure if it's still in the bag.  Nothing new, Phil likes to tinker with equipment.

Interesting, I wouldn't of thought that his contract with Callaway would let him put a Taylormade club in the bag.

Slightly off, but dealing with Callaway:

Heard that Ernie is playing the Lethal and Callaway officially has no comment on it.

Ernie leaving Callaway?

He is popular but he has peaked, it seems.

Callaway does need a high profile right hander, imho.

As to Phil, who knows why he tinkers with success. He is a conundrum wrapped in an enigma.

Actually Phil's contract with Callaway is as flexible as you'll ever find for a pro golfer.  I guess when you've been Callaways #1 guy and primary player who sells their clubs for them lol, you can do that.  After all the fans questioning the SLDR in his bag Callaway even came out and said Phil is welcome to use any competitor club he wants under his current callaway contract.  They also said they are working on a brand new driver for Phil that will give him what he wants but it isn't ready yet.

Callaway XR 9.5 + 1, Taylormade R15 3 Wood, Burner 3 Rescue, Callaway XHot 5H, Warbird 4H, Nike Vapor Fly 6-AW Irons, Titleist Vokey 54, 60 Wedges, Taylormade Rossa Fontana Putter, Srixon Z-Star Tour Yellow.

Best Score 2017:  82 (Traditions at the Glen, Par 70)

Favorite Course - Conklin Players Club (Par 72) - Best Score 86

Its about winning....by doing so he protects his Brand, his brand being Phil Michelson......Another reason he may have used it or any other brand of club  Its the end of the PGA season and I think his contract is up with Callaway this year  ( I could be wrong though)

Phil tinkers with everything, Its my opinion if they ever get around to "mike-ing up " players, Phil will be first in line.

Aren't most club contracts a minimum amount of clubs, plus logo bag?

bag contract is usually separate or an addendum to a club contract

Pretty sure they are all different.  You see a lot of players that are soup to nuts one brand, and then there are others that have a mish mash.  As far as the bag goes, some people don't even have club companies.  I don't think Tiger has ever really had club logos on his bag.  Buick, for the longest time, pre-fire hydrant, and "Fuse" (I still don't know what that is) basically ever since.  Kenny Perry has The Greenbrier as one of his big sponsors.  Cristie Kerr has a Liberty National bag.

I would say, though, that your garden variety, fully-exempt PGA player is frequently going to have a bag that matches his irons, at the very least.  From that point, who knows?  Some of them probably have 14 club contracts, others probably only have 8.  Others still choose to retain freedom and have no contract  (K.J. Choi, I think??).

Callaway stated that Phil's contract is very flexible and allows him to play other manufacturers equipment when they do not have a comparable product ready.  Callaway is coming out with a low spin driver to compete with the SLDR but they didn't have a prototype ready for him so he spray painted the SLDR black and put it in his bag.

The Phrankenwood was a prototype designed for Phil to bag at the Masters, I assume the test didn't go as well as hoped.  Callaway never intended to offer the Phrankenwood to the retail market and instead pushed the X Hot 3Deep which Phil has also bagged for a few tournaments.

I just learned today, one of the local Pro's told me that Phil's contract with Callaway says that he must have 11 Callaway clubs in the bag, the other three clubs are his choice.
