Found a shaft; how to use it.

Found a nice, near new, Aldila shaft in the clubhouse trash bin. Also had a oversize Lamkin grip, wasn't so sure if i liked that. But i sure would like to use the shaft. It's might fit a 5wood or hybrid, maybe a long iron. The tip is ragged, probably the head got mashed into the tree trunk ?! or something. Sure i know that cutting off lots of tip changes the character of the flex, but how much could i cut off? I may like to try the shaft in a 5 or 7i, just to try the graphite vs. the heavy steel shafts i use in my irons. Shaft says 'dvs-hl, 55 gms, kick mid, torque 4.6. Advice? Please don't  tell me it's best suited as a 'hiking stick', as i have 4 of those already.

It could be a ladies or amateur flex shaft, and it's pretty cheap. I think it would balloon on anything you put it on and might break. I would save the grip if possible, but not the shaft. Maybe use it as a training aid or alignment rod.

Yeah the HL in DVS-HL most likely denotes "high launch". I have a pile of old shafts that I use for alignment rods or training aids for drills.

Lucius, i have never yet 'saved a grip' from off a club. How do you do that?  I can only get rubber ribbons when i change grips.

I use Pure grips on my clubs and they are "blown" onto the shaft with an air compressor.  No solvent, no tape (except single sided for buildup if you want), and they come off just as easy.

I still don't think that is the common installation procedure yet - most likely the grip is toast - but I'm guessing this is what Lucious meant when he said save it "if possible." ;)

I watched a YouTube Video on using an air compressor and a paper towel tube to remove golf pride grips... Well, after the first one ballooned and ripped the paper towel tube to shreds, I went to Orchard Hardware and got a 1 and a half inch schedule 80 pipe to replace the paper towel tube. The grips came off without using solvent and look like they can be used again. Just the first one kind of bulges a little where it blew up like a balloon. I was surprised it did not blow up in my face.

You can also use either a thin spatula type tool to get solvent under the grip and slide it off, but it's a mess. You could also use a big syringe loaded up with solvent to shoot it through the grip but this is an old school and dangerous method. You could shoot solvent into your finger by accident which wouldn't be very good for your golf at all.

I probably wouldn't bother unless the grip was new; I just bought a Pure grip kit with the compressor tool to use when I reshaft my irons. I can play around with counterweights, different tape thicknesses, etc.

One note: for the air compressor method to work, there can't be a hole in the bottom of the shaft. It either needs a head installed or an epoxy plug in the tip left over after it's pulled. If the shaft is cracked, it may leak air too and you can't use the air pressure method without a seal.

A high launch shaft, probably with mid spin, with high torque to offer "better" feel.

Does that suit you?

Depends on the condition of the tip and whether it was previously tipped. But it may serve as a 3 or 5 wood shaft. If it wasn't tipped, check aldila's site for tipping instructions.
