First time poster.....As I use to be a 12 handicap, I am now a 22. Ex. I will shoot 100 with 12 penalty strokes. I have taken a few lessons to really work on my swing path.

What i noticed recently and would like feedback...

When I hit my 9,PW,LW, and Gap wedge, I tend to take a super big divot (like 6-12 inches), and deep. But, my ball goes where I want it and the distance I want. Why am I taking such divot, and what would be causing me to do this. Should I fix and is there a fix?

Secondly, is the divot mark suppose to be in line with the direction? I have notice lately that my divots tend to go right, but my ball still goes where I want it to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated......

Going by what you said and by what you're shooting, good chance the path is too far to the left.  Recommend taking a look at these videos to help get the path less left.  Basically what is happening is the club head is swinging down and to the left, the weight is probably not forward enough to allow the club head to ascend out of the ground properly.

I wouldn't worry too much about the direction of the divots because they can be misleading.  You can draw the ball and have the divot be straight or even slightly left.  For more on divots go here http://thesandtrap.com/t/53952/divots

Well if you have huge divots it means you hit down on the ball well. I don't see a huge problem. Look on the tour. players hit big divots also. as long your not digging in the ground your ok

I'd suggest that players tend to take very shallow divots on the PGA Tour. With long irons they often barely get into the dirt, and with short irons the divots resemble, in the words of Moe Norman, bacon strips, not pork chops (IIRC).

It really depends on what he means by "big" divots, but a very steep AoA can be indicative of a lot of things, and if they're well to the left, it's more likely that the OP is coming over the top and swinging down and left through the golf ball.

OP, I would listen to iacas and mvmac.

They deal with swing issues of golfers on a daily basis.

At the same time, depending on the shot, I like a shallow-medium divot in the shape of a dollar bill and after the ball.

Agree on the shallow divot part. Had a long time teaching pro tell me that the goal should be able to pick the ball clean...almost if you were hitting off of your kitchen table. You wouldn't want to slam into the table..but pick it clean. So many theories on divot or no divot..but when I really start gouging it..that is when I'm playing very poorly and really have to rely on the short game. One of those self monitoring things by u..maybe the area u play or practice is experiencing a "wet season" of some sorts..or maybe your clubs aren't fit properly for u A million reasons,...just think it thru mate

Like working on the swing,,score means nothing to me. Might just go to the range and give up playing... ( might happen)

Speaking of shallow divots, love the way this shot sounds.  Rare to see a good player taking a "deep" divot.

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
