Let me start off by saying. Tiger Woods is an excellent athlete and is very well disciplined.

His father (rest in peace) was a marine who disciplined his son in golf. These days you will see father's teaching their son's the game and practing w/ them. But i'm sure that Tiger's father used some of his strict marine discipline training. Even til today i'm sure Tiger practices just as hard today as he did as a child. At a young age, the game is pick up quicker or more engraved in their mind than it is as someone who is 21+. Tiger is on pace to be the undisputed greatest golfer ever alive. In my opinion, after Tiger has left the game or possibley when or if he joins the senior tour, will we see another player of his caliber.

But again this is just my opinion...

please reply if you have any comments on this.

ps this is just a bored at work post

I'm not sure I even disagree, (but I'm bored, too), so I'll pipe in just for conversation's sake.

For starters, his Father was in the Army, not the Marines.

Beyond that, why would it be that he is the only former soldier to have a son that wants to golf? or Marine, for that matter?

Granted his Father instlled a great sense of discipline, but there are Fathers out there right now who are instilling discipline in their sons, and will be more in the future.

Now - all that said, I don't think there will be another like him.

There was only one Jack, one Bobby, one Walter, one...

at this rate though; jack, bobby and walter would be like...

jerry west, bill walton and kareem.... tiger , if he keeps up pace, would be like... michael jordan all were great but #1 overall dominating player , there only can be 1..... like you said... one....

lets 1st of all start off by saying that along with his Fathers up bringing with the game of Golf that unless Tiger hadn't be given some GOD GIVEN ability that all this would be void anyways imho...some people have played Golf all their lifes and are no where near Tigers ability.

Let me also say, that everybody probably thought there would never be another Jack (someone who could win that many Tournaments, Majors etc...) also nobody ever thought there would be another Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Joe D', Ted Williams etc...., nobody ever thought there be another Johnny Unitas, Dick Butkuz, Gale Sayers etc....

the one thing that is for sure is this, that there will be another to step in and do the same if not even more then their successors, but nobody ever takes away from those GREATS of yesterday, they at that time were great and nothing or nobody can diminish that imho.

So, in closing while I think Tigers is GREAT, I will not say that there will never be another like him, (as far as winning tournaments and Majors are concerned) if for nothing else then because technology itself will be better in the future, as it is now for all sports compared to years past.

For what it's worth, Tiger always said it was his mother who was the "strict diciplinarian". His dad was a real softy compared to her.

? thanks for staying on topic.....

btw what does my age have anything to do w/ this? i'm 24 years old.... not trying to hide anything like i said in the beginning... "Let me start off by saying. Tiger Woods is an excellent athlete and is very well disciplined." Tiger still has a lot of golf left in him. Tiger is 31, started pro career in 1996 to current( 9 years as a pro). Jack played from 1961 to 2005, thats 44 years on the tour... i'm not saying his parents are totally reponsible for him being who he is now. but he picked up many traits that his father (yes and mother) had. honestly, i think, there won't be another tiger woods for a long time (10+ years) for those who aren't too familiar w/ basket ball. jerry west, bill walton and kareeem were the best players of their era and will be top 50 basketball players of all time. but michael jordan is like #1 overall (all-time) basketball player. I really think looking at the stats. its just like comparing tiger to jack. Great players but there can be only 1 #1 Bill Walton : 1978 NBA MVP 1978 Sporting News NBA MVP Two-time NBA Champion (1977, 1986) 1977 Finals MVP 1986 NBA Sixth Man of the Year Jerry West: Hall of Fame Player Inductee (1979) NBA 50 Greatest Players (1996) 10-time All-NBA First Team (1962-67, 1970-73) 1969 NBA Finals MVP 13-time All-Star selection (1961-73) NBA All-Star MVP (1972) Kareem: Six-time NBA MVP Six-time Sporting News NBA MVP Six-time NBA Champion Two-time Finals MVP NBA Rookie of the Year (1970) Michael Jordan: NBA Rookie of the Year (1985) NBA Defensive Player of the Year (1988) NBA MVP (1988, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1998) NBA Finals MVP (1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998) NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team (1997) Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year (1991) 2000 ESPY Athlete of the Century 2000 ESPY Male Athlete Decade Award (1990s) 2000 ESPY Pro Basketballer Decade Award (1990s) AND AGAIN.... THIS IS MY OPINION...

Anyone can look that up. If you saw Nicklaus play you might feel differently.

Heck if you ever saw Oscar Robertson play, you might put him in front of MJ too.

The Big "O" AVERAGED a triple double for a year.

we're talking about michael jordan.... mr slam duck from the free throw w/ plenty of hang time to spare... Big O was a great player but what matters.. winning.... michael jordan took the bulls the NBA championships from 1991-1993 and then 1996-1998. NBA Regular season MVP in 1988,1991,1992, 1996, 1998 and also was the NBA Finals MVP in 1991,1992,1993,1996,1997,1998....

No offense, Big O was great player but no michael jordan...

Wilt Chamberlain is still the greatest player of all time. The man was a monster among toddlers.

Either way, there will always, for as long as we live on this earth, always gonna be somebody better then the best. Tiger will rule, and in time, somebody will come along and crush his records. It happens in everything.

IMO, if sports (or life in general) teaches us anything regarding milestones it is that once set, there will always be kids who fixate on those benchmarks and use them to motivate the trajectory of their lives. Furthermore, every now and then one of those kids breaks through and pushes the bar up a notch or ten.

I think he is actually making a good point, and I'm only 20. Since everyone is talking about MJ, I'll go on this route. When Kobe came into the league, everyone was wondering if he could be the next MJ. Obviously, he isn't. He's a great player, but he's not that good. Now Lebron is being compared to MJ and everyone wants to pull up obscure facts like the amount of sweat Lebron lost in the fourth quarter of game 2 of the first round of the playoffs in his fourth year and compare it to how much MJ lost when he was there. The point is this; anytime someone great comes down the pike, there is always going to be a debate about who is better or even the best. It seems that the best measuring stick for greatness is championships won. Tiger will probably break Jack's record and be considered the best ever to play. However, just like Aaron's HR record and Payton's rushing record, records are made to be broken. It may take a long time, but someone will come along some day and be better than Tiger. It will happen.

I didn't forget it. He was the third person to break that record in the last four year. He broke Shawn Alexander's record. And Alexander broke Priest Holmes record. That record just doesn't have the longevity that Aaron or Payton's record did.

Believe it or not, I've never seen the movie. Just pulling old golfer names out of the mist. Could've just as easily said Arnie, Lee or Gary I suppose.

...and there's no disputing Bobby Jones' importance to the game!
