Ping I20 vs. Titleist 714 AP1 vs. TItleist 714 AP2

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the correct forum or not but I'm going to be getting new clubs relatively soon and over the weekend I hit a Ping i20 and a Titleist 714 AP1.

Both felt great but after reading up a bit, it seems like the AP2 is more comparable to the Ping i20 than the AP1.

Is this a safe presumption to make?  If so, I'll likely go back and hit the AP2 to get a better idea of how it feels compared to the i20.

Ap2 is very expensive, and the i20 will probably go on sale soon. Plus, I thought NY is getting too cold to golf. Would it be better to purchase a new series of clubs this spring?

i20 is basically in between the AP2 and AP1 in terms of size.  They "slimmed" down the 714 AP1, less offset and thinner topline than previous models.  I like the i20's, here's my review http://thesandtrap.com/b/clubs/ping_i20_irons_review

Like Lihu said, I think you'll see a price drop soon on the i20's, i25's will be coming out in Feb

I had the 712 Ap2 and recently upgraded to the new 714 AP2.  Totally different club.  The I20 I also was on the fence on.  I went with the AP2 because for me it was a much more forgiving club.  All I can say is see if you can demo both on Trackman or on an outdoor range even better.  You want to see the ball flight and what its doing.  Now is the perfect time to be fitted.  You never want to be fitted in early spring.  If you play alot do it now while your swing is still in "mid season form."  Trust me.  You dont want to be fitted for new clubs early spring when you havent really been playing.  The new AP2's are solid.  I'm still trying to put down a review of the differences between the old and new models. Need more time. The weight is different on the 714's.  Seems much lighter and balanced well.  Solid ball strike.  I love the new clubs.

Really?  Do you know what changes they made from the i20 to the i25?

Well I'm planning on hone my swing more during the winter so I don't worry so much about my swing not being in mid-season form.  I guess there is some difference from course play to practicing my swing in my backyard or at the range.

This is a tough one. If you want the newest club, I would add it to your choice list.

If you want a club that is pretty darn good, the i20 is it. The only thing I don't like is the high ball flight, but I am pretty sure they will make updates that will only make the flight higher.

Never hit the S55, but the AP2 we're nice. I tested them at Roger Dunn in Santa Ana. I guess I could have tested the S55, but I figured I wanted something easier to hit than the MP32 or the Cleveland CG tour I use for training. It's really hard to get the feel of something with tape on the club, though. They only have the 6i or 7i on the demo rack. I also liked the rocketbladz, which Shorty recommended. Very soft on the hands on a mis-hit.

I don't but I think the tuning port is going to be larger/deeper.  I think the head will look pretty similar at address.

S55's are really nice.  AP2 and i20's go about the same height and S55's will go lower.  Pretty easy to hit though for a "blade" type club.

I've had a chance to hit all three, and @mvmac nailed it with the i20s essentially being right in between the AP1s and AP2s.

So as far as ease to hit they are all similar?

i20's and AP2's have wider soles and lower CG.  I wouldn't say the S55's are "hard to hit" but the i20's are best on off center hits.

I see you have the Ping I20's in your bag.  Did you decide to go with them over the AP2's for a particular reason with respect to hit or did you already have the I20's?

I might be brainwashed and a complete market monkey, but I really want Titleist irons, haha.  I know Ping makes good irons so I wouldn't be upset if I go that route but, for some reason, mentally, when I think Titleist is the top of the line.

      Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
