Hey all. Ok 8-12 handicap I have noticed and tracked the last 10-15 rounds I have noticed that when getti g off the tee box like I am supposed to Seems my average shots are Driver hybrid ( wedge) if I come up short on par 5 On par 4 driver then pw or less Hardly ever hit my irons 4-9 except for a couple par 3s Typically seems like a carry a bag of oh what should I use When really don't use any of them that often What do you guys think how do your rounds go What clubs don't you use

I had an old thread like this: http://thesandtrap.com/t/61785/what-club-that-you-keep-in-your-bag-do-you-use-the-least-and-speculate-why

Checked out your post I guess my question isn't which club do you not use Question is on average par 4 and par 5 holes and long par 3 holes From tee to green I usually hit driver then pw -58 wedge for par 4 And on par 5 usually driver than 16-20 hybrid then wedge if green is missed Long par 3 180-205. Use 16-20 hybrid Which leaves me rarely using 4-9 iron. Wondering if anyone else had similar issiues or Experiances like this. Making me wonder why I worry about my irons so much This isn't just one course this is over a mix of 5-7 courses From the blue tees. Just curious so chime in

I think that's what I like about my home course, I don't have a club in my bag that I don't hit.  Now I'm not saying I might play a round and not hit my 9 iron or anything like that, but in general I hit all the clubs in my bag.  I honestly think if all I hit was woods and wedges on a course, I would find another course to play.

I could use any one of my irons during a well played round. I went through my home track and used fairway position, I had the option to use every club at least twice depending on drive and tee box location except for my 5 iron. Irons 2-4 were used less but were required for tee offs and a long par 3. You might consider playing a further back tee to open the course up for you.

I use all my clubs regularly. IMO if someone is hitting lots of driver PW on par 4's they're playing too far up or their course is very short. I play from 6600 yards and we don't have many sub 400 yard par 4's. You would have to consistently get it out there 290+ to be hitting a PW approach at my home course, that's from the middle tees. For me everything hinges on the quality of my drive. Example, #2 is a 432 yd par 4. I've used everything from 8i-7w for my 2nd shot this year. There were certainly some exceptions, much longer and shorter than usual drives. I would say most of the time on that hole 7i-5i. But there is more to it than distance. The hole plays differently as they move the flag around. Depending on where it is it may require flying to the green or landing it 15 yds in front and running it up. Typically I am concerned with where my miss will leave me if I don't execute so club selection is based on that as well. As you get to know your course I assume someone playing 8-12 golf would be choosing clubs with that in mind. I never get my number and just assume there's just one club for it. The course is always changing, things get moved, weather etc.

Seems like you need to play a longer/harder course. Any course that has a decent layout will prevent most golfers from just bombing their driver on every hole. I play from 6800 yards and it is rare for me not to hit every club in my bag during a round and I play my drives 280+

I play a lot of different courses so I hit almost all of my clubs. What's odd is I rarely hit a 9 or 5 iron. I for whatever reason hit a ton of 8's and a lot of 7,6,4. I have a track where 2 of the par 3's are a perfect 9 iron but rarely play there.

I try to pay close attention to what is being used and what isn't, right now my 54* doesn't get very much use and my 3 wood seems to get neglected as well, it's not that I don't have any confidence hitting them it's just the way I'm playing my set right now. I would really like to have a trackman session this next spring and get a good idea on my distance with each club so I can make an educated decision on what changes I may need.

For me the most underutilized club has to be my driver actually. While I have been hitting it well recently (5/8 fairways using the driver in my last two rounds, which is unfortunately an improvement for me), I've been hitting my 3-wood even better. Out of 18 fairways, I've hit 16 of them in my last two rounds played which I know is an absolute statistical anomaly. Due to inclement weather (ie: 4 inches of snow and temperatures of -6* in the morning), I haven't been able to play since those two rounds but I was convinced to use my 3-wood even more. I already used it around 50% of the time depending on the width of the fairway, but I found that my distance loss with it is only about 15 yards off the tee. Unless I'm playing a long par 4 or a shorter par 5, I have no reason to use the driver at all.

In terms of an actual iron, I would have to say that my 6 iron is the least used. I've used it once in the past 4 rounds, off the tee on a par 3, because it fits into a distance that I don't usually see. While the 5 iron and 4-h are hit on long par 4's, the 6i is really a weird distance for anything but a mid-length par 3. I wouldn't ditch it, since I actually like to use it when I'm in trees and feel adventurous enough to try and bend the ball out of trouble, but it is one that I wouldn't miss much on a usual round other than the irritation from not having even numbers of clubs in each slot of my bag.

Well first of all, I use all my clubs. 4i is used a lot for punch shots. Just out of curiosity, if your second shots are PW or less on a par 4, why is your HC listed as 10? Should it be a +10? Or do you not have a putter, and need to use your driver to putt? :-O

For some reason, the club I hit least is probably the 9i. Back in the 1970s, I actually left the 9i out of the bag for a couple of seasons so I could carry a PW, SW, and an old 1930s Niblick (old 9i).

The niblick had a large oval face the size of the palm of my hand, and a flat clubhead only about 1/4" thick, with a rather sharp edge on it. You could chop out of shaggy rough with it (major beaver-pelt divots), even cut through 1/2" thick saplings to get back to the fairway.

Focus, connect and follow through!

OP, how far are you hitting your driver? if you are a bigger hitter, 275+, there really is no reason not to play the back tees

I use all my clubs

driver - Par 5's and long Par 4's

3w - short to average par 4's

3-5 iron - Par 5 approaches and long par 3's

6-9 iron - par 3's or approaches on par 4's

PW & 56 degree - chipping, pitching, and rarely an approach

60 degree - Sand shots and 30-80 yard shots

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.

    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
