Ok so i have an issue coming in steep and i can fix it for a few holes, 9 max, but then fall back into coming in steep. so i tried starting to hit a draw. i did this by taking half a step back with my back foot to help me swing in to out. it has helped me push draw the ball. its been working good for me and my theory is that doing this for a few rounds and times at the practice range will help me not come in steep with a normal stance. has anyone else done this or does anyone know if this will help me stop coming in steep on a regular stance or am i just wasting my time?

If it works why not just stick with setting up with the right foot back?

If you're coming in too steep it's probably a Key #2 issue.  Having the weight forward makes it a lot easier to swing OUTward.

Descending too steep is a swing habit which you will need to correct.

I have seen players who are steep into the ball and they usually rip deep divots.

Craig Stadler is known for his steep decent into the ball.

Changing stance as you indicted (placing back foot in the bucket or as you indicated, slightly behind front foot)

would change the swing path. But, careful with this technic, it could lead to trapping a shot if this habit develops.

Thoughts on swing path changes - Learn to "pick the ball" by using a longer sweeping arc of the club.

For short irons and wedges, place the ball position in the middle of stance.

Move the ball position slightly forward as you use mid and long irons.

Also, concentrate on swing path of hands extending/continuing towards the target after impact in your follow through.

Steep can be used for a short crisp shot with wedge play for some shots.

Other shots using a steep decent would be deep rough, when you need to "dig the ball" term.

Stingers are also somewhat of a slightly steeper attack into the ball.

Bunker shots can also be played with a steep decent, when needed.

Too steep is never a good thing and its something you should try to fix.  I suggest seeking the help of a good instructor to figure out why youre steep.

Weight forward at impact with the head steady, creates axis tilt (spine tilted to the right) helps "stretch" the arms and gets the club out of the ground.

Steep can be used for a short crisp shot with wedge play for some shots.

Other shots using a steep decent would be deep rough, when you need to "dig the ball" term.

You actually want a shallow AoA for short pitches and even chips.  Steep AoA cause contact and trajectory inconsistency.

Another thought which causes a steep decent.

When a player slides the hips forward, along with the shoulders rotating too quickly with the hip slide,

then the arms drop too steep through the swing.

Basically, they never fire the right side through the swing.

A very common habit of someone who has played baseball or softball with the swinging of the bat.

People who have tennis and hockey skills develop the proper weight transfer motion which fits well to the golf swing.

Man i went to the range today and trying focusing on swinging along my foot line and i hit some good shots but my 3 wood and long irons were either fat or fading too much right. i am taking lessons right now, I've had 2, but i don't like retain the info. i am having problems relating to what my instructor is telling me. he uses words like "make your swing flatter" "your hands need to be deeper" "Release the club" but to be honest i have no idea what that means. i search on youtube to find info but nothing has really clicked with me.any ideas or videos you guys use???

If you don't understand what he's saying, ask him to explain it in simple terms that you Can understand. A good instructor won't mind doing that. I'm not an instructor, so I'll let those that are explain.

@KyleAnthony , I'd really recommend you sign up for a month of Evolvr lessons. You simply can't beat the price, almost guaranteed to be cheaper than what you're paying now, and you will have a much better idea of what you need to work on. The lessons are only 7-10 minutes long but HUGELY effective as they zero in on your PRIORITY piece, explain it to you and give you a drill to develop that piece. IMHO, 10 minutes from an Evolvr coach is far superior to an hour with a mediocre or bad coach who is just going to spout a bunch cliché swing tips or overload you with stuff that isn't a priority.

It's all about being efficient which is where Evolvr (and 5SK) excel, these guys will find the one thing that will create the most improvement. Before I started taking Evolvr lessons I would just look for info on the net which led to me working on all kinds of different things all the time with zero lasting improvement. Evolvr found the one piece that I could work on that would fix a whole bunch of stuff as a side effect of the piece I was actively working on! One of my issues was standing up through impact, I started working on that but it made everything else worse. Then I started evolvr and they had me work on my path instead. Guess what? By getting my path working my path outwards, lo and behold, I stopped standing up through impact! So I fixed (well, still a WIP) 2 issues at once whereas when I was concentrating on the standing up I was just making my path and weight transfer worse while making the cosmetic change with my standing up bit.

If you're like me you'll only need a handful of lessons to give you a road map of what to work on for the rest of the year. Once you get a solid grasp of what you need to work on you can get advice on here as you work on that piece. You'll also get the added benifit of knowing when people are spouting nonsense, so you'll have that going for you, which is nice ;-)

Yours in earnest, Jason.

Kyle, come to our SoCal outing on Feb 16th (Goose Creek) and you'll get to meet a couple of the 5SK/Evolvr guys. It will give you a chance to realize how good they are ... Then I just about guarantee you'll want to try out a month of Evolvr. ;)
