Iron Shafts

Hello wonderful people of The Sand Trap community. Tonight I have a question regarding shafts in my irons. I have been considering getting a new set of irons and recently posted a thread (New irons for a teen) regarding iron choices. Though I plan to get custom fit I really don't know where to start. I like a heavier shaft and currently use Dynamic Gold S300 shafts which I would not mind having a bit heavier shaft than that. I swing my driver around 103-105 MPH and as I have been working on core strength and overall strength my swing speed has been increasing. I am not against the idea of graphite shafts but I do want something that feels similar to a steel shaft. I know that Project X, KBS, Dynamic Gold, Nippon and Aerotech all make a high quality iron shaft but I would love to hear what you guys prefer and what you would recommend for me. Anything helps and I wish you all a Bogey-free new year .

I don't think knowing what other people like will do you very much good but FWIW I have Project X 6.0 in my irons and I like them.

If your getting fit for your new irons, the club fitter will find the best shafts for you. Keep in mind, everyone is different,

I have the Aerotech Players Spec Stiff(flowed) in both my TM MB's and TM RBZ Tour sets...I don't see myself going back to steel with current shaft technology...

What is the weight on those shafts?

I don't see myself going to graphite, until I can't swing steel anymore, on any club.

Every club in my bag has a nice heavy and sturdy steel shaft in it.

The frequency of each shaft changes with the weight as well(cpm's  and weights are much tighter with the Players Specs...I've played kbs tours, dgs300 and x100's, project x's flighted and non and have found the feel and consistency from club to club with the aerotech product to be outstanding...the biggest draw back to the Players Spec vs. i95 is cost but I liked then so much(because they fit me) and bought them again to put in my RBZ tours

Nope, even the woods and hybrids have steel shafts.

what do you have in your driver and 3 wood? Is your driver 43"?

46" overall driver, 43" overall 3W. Dynamic gold steel wood shaft. Just changed it. Much more accurate and consistent, now. Didn't really lose distance, might have even gained some.

did you counter weight your driver or are you ok with the higher swing weight?

I need the added swing weight to keep my swing under control. I did a series of tests using an accelerometer, and found that the added mass reduces a jerky motion in my swing. Maybe, if (or when) I get better I can take advantage of a lighter shaft.

Bring that you're growing, you might discuss softstepping with your club fitter. In softstepping, you put a shaft tipped for 2i in your 3i, tipped for 3i in your 4i, etc., and then butt trim for length. You are extending the length of the flexible tip section of the club. This softens the flex about 1/3 a flex.

If you softstepped an S300, which has an FCM of 5.8, you would end up with an FCM of 5.5. Later on, as you get stronger, you could undo the softstepping to increase the flex back to FCM = 5.8. You would need to return the 3i-tipped shaft to the 3i, the 4i to the 4i, etc. You would extend each shaft 1/2" to get the shaft back to proper length for each club.

You could reverse the softstepping during the winter when you get your irons regripped. Undoing the softstepping would cost $10 to $15 a club, basically the cost of reshaft labor.

Most of all, try out different shafts with your fitter. Remember to consider the interplay of weight and relative flex. Use the frequent coefficient matching (FCM) flex ratings to compare flexes across different manufacturers.
