Had our annual Christmas tourney, there was a formal weather warning of wind possibly reaching 70mph but we agreed if course was open we'd play! Never played in winds like it! Stupidly took the push trolley which then blew over at least three times a hole, even with brakes on, hats blowing off all over, and balls flying everywhere! But I have to say.. Great fun! With the wind blowing the ball up to 60 yards on drives and at least 10/15 on wedges it was a different game completely! Can only describe it as extreme golf! Still managed to score 33 and came second to a score of 35! possibly would have won it had I not lost my phone halfway round which put me right off my game for a few holes! Anyway, I Would recommend it to anyone... But not every week!

Not sure what the wind was here, but I know @iacas had some crazy weather when he played in Scotland last year.

Not sure what the wind was here, but I know @iacas had some crazy weather when he played in Scotland last year.

Yeah, that was the day before we played at Turnberry when the winds were a steady 35 MPH with gusts to 60. Virtually every other course in the area was closed due to high winds. It took three SOLID and low 3-irons to get to the front fringe on many of the par fours.

Down in Oklahoma and northern Texas, I witnessed a situation called blowback.

It occurs when you have a very strong headwind (about 50 mph). If the wind gets funneled through a trough in the hills, it seems to increase the speed.

I was playing with a Texan who was familiar with a course, and I was ahead of our group up to the right of the green. He hit a 5-iron approach from the fairway.  I watched the ball actually carry about 20 yards past the pin, and then start moving back toward the pin as it fell. The ball hit near the flagstick, and rolled about 20 yards backward toward the front of the  green.

If you have a quartering headwind, left and right adjustments are needed.

I played a course earlier this year where the 120 yard 18th over water was only reachable with a full swing driver. Crazy wind.

Wow, that's some wind! My local course has a par 3 which is usually a 7 or 6 iron, its elevated. Had to take driver out, hit it pure only to come just short of the green.

@iacas is such a boss.  That is a helluva out.  I couldn't play with you guys because I'd go all NBA every time you stuck a shot like that.

BTW, the green didn't really slope that direction much - the ball moved right because of the wind.

Played in 30-40 mph gusts once. I happen to pop up my driver at the exact time a strong lasting gusting straight back at me. The ball would have went about 200 yards with no wind. At the apex the ball started to come backwards and it drifted into some heavy tree area that constricts the driving tee shot (bottleneck). It was interesting to lose a good 40 yards and the golf ball :dance:

There is a links course near me with a par 3 facing the sea, 7i with no wind, but when the winds a blowing only the big hitters can make it with driver! But what I learned from this experience, is take just the carry bag, half a set of clubs, a wooly hat with no visor, and keep the ball low wherever possible!

I hate playing in strong winds. I know it's part of the game, but it's a part that I just don't enjoy. I really struggle with it. I played in a tournament last year with steady 25 mph winds and 40 mph gusts and I could not just distances to save my life.
