Partial LW not swinging too hard to control spin. I usually play this shot to land just short and release a touch.

Why would you want it to roll backwards? Just aim for the pin and stick it where you land it.

I voted partial stock SW, but back me up 15 more yards and I'm going for the drop and stop. Same club, half swing.

Favorite shot from 50 yards?

Depends on how I'm playing. If I'm on my game, I'll probably hit a big pitch with my 56* or a hard halfswing with my 60*.

If I'm off my game my favorite shot from 50 yards is Bushmill's.

In the winter on wet, long, grainy, dormant Bermuda I use the 1st with a PW almost all of the time.

I'm looking forward to playing the short game like this, feeling pretty confident over a range of shots.  I've just started to expand my choice of shots from around this distance and started playing a low (for the loft) spinner with my 54˚ sometimes.  Most of the course I play regularly have medium to medium-hard greens (except sometimes in the morning if they've been over watered, then they're fairly soft), so with my current ability with this shot I play it for a long skip, hard check, and short roll out, though obviously with varying results.

Up until now I've concentrated most of my practice on the full swing.  In terms of Erik's 65/25/10 practice ratio, I'm probably more like 75/20/5, maybe even 80/15/5, and haven't wanted to up the short game practice to dial in different shots to the point where I'm confident over them on the course.  So I've stuck mostly to dialing in the 60˚ from this range.  I'm no sniper from this range, but I feel like my ability/consistency with that club is right around where it should be for my index, so it hadn't felt worth it to devote significant time to expanding my shot choice.  But I've had a lot of fun mixing in even just the one new shot on the course, so I think I'll keep at it and continue trying to add new shots to make things more fun and interesting.  I think next choice is a closer to full swing high shot for a drop and stop with either my 54˚ or 60˚.

I use the method taught in Dave Pelz's, "Short Game Bible." This shot for me is a 9:00 lob wedge.

Low LW or SW that takes one big hop and stops. I've also started playing this shot with a 50*, but I've yet to quite figure it out.

Partial LW.  It is a 3/4 swing for me.  I will sometimes do a pitch shot with my SW too if it is uphill to get more roll out.

There isnt 1 answer to this question.  It depends upon the lie, where the flag is and how soft or firm the greens are.  If the ball is sitting up and the greens are soft, I'll pull out my 58 degree, open up the face and hit a flop.  If its a tight lie and theres some room to let let the ball run out, I'll pull out my PW or 9-iron and hit a low little runner.

Uhm. For the record that and putting are all I've got. The rest of my game hangs on by a very thin thread that could break at any time (and often does).

I try to avoid this yardage at all cost.  It's not an easy shot.  When in this position, I'll take my 58* wedge, open it up a bit and try a 3/4 swing to hit one high and soft.  That's the plan ... until it's bladed across the green or chunked into the sand or rough around green!

Niblick into the side of the hill at the front of the green or a niblick with 2 bounces onto the green and ensuing rollout.

Nose high 2 bounce drill bit.

Lob wedge draw / flop / chip / lob are my favorite shots inside 50 yards.
My least favorite is being short sided and facing a fast breaking green so if I can't flop it then I will toe down chip that resembles more like a putt that was discuss in recent thread

If I'm 50 yds out I messed up - I'd go with a partial sw & pray a lot

I think the poll left out my most frequent options:

The Scull

The Blade

The Hosel

and The Chunk

I find that the Scull tends to get me accidentally on the green more often regardless of what I TRY to attempt as follows:

  • Medium amount of room to release:  a 30 yard pitching swing with my SW but close the face slightly more to get the extra yards,
  • Stop it or spin it back or over something:  a good LW flop - love that shot
  • Lots of green to roll it out:  been practicing chips to various yards lately with great success so that's likely my next set of options if I have room for roll out

I'm also getting nicely practiced on "The Stupid Decelerating Downswing" - it's a great way to hit a 50 yard chip shot only 20 feet

I just tought it could be easier to always do a full swing that goes farther than the pin and roll it back afterward, but maybe I am wrong.

Anyway, since I can't put any backspin on any shot yet, I simply try to judge the correct swing speed for the distance left if it less than 60 yards.
