My Swing (Big C)

Howdy all,

 

I've seen some great advice dispensed on these threads and wanted to throw my hat in the ring for help. I have an opinion on what  some of my biggest flaws are, but I will post these videos without comment and ask for the forum's thoughts as well. Thanks in advance.

 

I've been Playing Golf for:​ 10 Years

My current handicap index or average score is: 7.7

My typical ball flight is: High Ball flight with the Irons/Erratic with the woods

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Dead pull (left) with my irons & snap hook with my driver.

@Big C ... your videos are set to private.  I think it's simply a setting on youtube and you don't have to actually do anything else here.  Just go to your youtube account and "flip the switch." ;)

Colin, I just went to youtube and it looks like what you have to do is go to the page of each video, click on "info and settings" button immediately under the video and it'll take you to a page with a public/private toggle switch.  Try that for each of these.

I see them now.  You've got a nice swing.  Really like the weight transfer to the front foot, nice steady head.  I don't see any super obvious swing flaws, so take my comments for the impressionistic take they are.

 

In a couple of those vids it looks like you're working really hard to roll it over and get the club face close.  I'd guess that forcing is the source of some inconsistency, snap hooks with the driver and pulls with the irons.  I'm not really sure as to the causes.  Various possible issues:

 

It looks to me like you're rushing just a tad at the top, leaving your hands behind.  And you don't really finish your swing with authority, like you're holding everything back to let your hands catch up and get the face closed, then just kinda let your hands drift through the finish?  Also looks like sometimes you're getting that back hip too close to the ball on the downswing, standing up a bit early.

Colin, nice swing!  Sheesh!!  The only thing I noticed (on your driver swing) is that you look like you kick your right knee out towards the ball at the start of your downswing and that causes (or helps cause) the nasty snap hooks.  Maybe give these two ideas a shot:

Drew, thanks for the links to those drills. My uncle who took those videos made the same comment - his advice was to keep my butt back, but for some reason that feel doesn't really work for me. I'll take a look at the links later this evening.

Thanks for the thoughts. The first time I saw my swing on video, I couldn't believe how much my hands collapsed or "rolled" across my body on the follow through - as opposed to finishing out towards the target. I've gotten a little better since then, but I still cringe when I get to that part of my swing.

I would just start pretty simple with the feet flare.  Turn both feet out about 20-25 degree and allow the knees to turn out as well.

 

 

Your feet are square and knees are rotated inward making it hard for the proper knee linkage to occur. Causes the hips the shift back and doesn't allow the left shoulder to continue traveling downward and inward.

 

 

Left foot/knee being turned out will also help this picture, left knee straightens too soon causing the upper body to over rotate into the followthrough.  Can see how their is too much weight in that right foot.  So not saying the foot flares will solve everything right away but they'll help and you'll have a much easier time improving.

Nice swing, and obviously to get to 7hcp you are making it work for you as you do have a pretty good steady head IMO for what it is worth.

 

I think it would be helpful for you to flare your feet out about 20* or so and that will help later on in getting your weight forward.  You will want to feel putting pressure on the ball of your left foot when you initiate the downswing and up until you extend right after impact.

 

 

Both of the drills above I'm sure will help, but compare the two positions of you and Mike above!

How were you hitting it?

 

Notice the hips aren't sliding back on the backswing anymore. Kind of over did it a little with the feet flare, reduce it by 5-10*. Left arm at address is a little bent, I'll make you a quick video on this tomorrow. Where the left arm meets the arm pit, let's call it the top of the left tricep, will feel more "on top" of the pec rather than to the side of the pec. 

 

If the left arm is too bent, that can effect your ability to swing outward enough and have a flat left wrist/inline impact.

Thanks, Mike. I was hitting the ball well for the most part. My ball flight was a bit erratic (some pushes that never came back, some draws that overdrew) but the contact was very good. There were only two iron shots out of about 50 that were memorably bad. I will work on reducing the angle of my foot flare next time I hit the range. Does the feel of having your upper arm more "on top" of the pec equate to closing the shoulders at address?

It might feel that way, but no, you could just close the shoulders without actually changing the location of your left arm relative to your torso.

 

Basically, cover your nipple more with your upper arm:

Might be a bit more forward lean too. If you lean back (you appear to be leaning almost away from the camera, or not as inclined as Jason), that's almost the same as puffing your chest out. So check in a mirror that you're not too vertical and that you have a good amount of forward lean and curve. Your arms should have room to "hang" in front of your nipple, basically, without having to be forced out there too far.
