I've been Playing Golf for:​ 10 months

My current handicap index or average score is: 18.5

My typical ball flight is: small fade, I suppose...although sometimes its a small draw or straight lol

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: hook, push

 


 

Videos: 

 

No FO videos yet, sorry. There is never any room at the crowded grass range of beautiful Costa Mesa Country Club (lol). This session was around 3 weeks ago. I wasn't exactly "on" this night, and there are things here I have since worked on w an instructor this last weekend. Mostly keeping my right elbow from getting too far around my body on the backswing, weight forward, clearing hips more, not letting my weight get on the outside of my right foot, keeping a little more flex in my right knee on the backswing. Obviously there are TONS more things to work on but these should keep me occupied for at least a month. One . . . thing . . . at . . . a . . . time.

 

 

My instructor videos a lot of my swings with an iPad but accidentally had it set to auto-delete last time...I will have higher quality vids, a FO vid, and more up-to-date swings after the next lesson I get from him in a month or so. For now...FIRE AWAY BOYS!

I think you have a lot of nice structure to the swing, except you're sitting way back into your heels at address.

 

 

Then to try and balance yourself, your hips move too far towards the ball and the weight is too far back. Hurts your ability to swing outward.

 

So I would recommend sticking your butt out less at address and feeling the weight more towards your toes to even things out.  Then you can start to use the ground more effectively and utilize these drills/feels.

Awesome thanks @mvmac !! I have had issues with leaning too far forward during my downswing, and I tend to try and compensate at address...I remember this particular session I could not get a comfortable weight distribution (heel to toe) for the life of me.

A couple swings from tonight. Trying to get a little better posture as mvmac suggested. Still further back on my heels than it felt like. Getting some good contact tonight though, and mostly straight or slight fade. Sorry I bumped the camera without knowing before the 7i shot. This 3W was straight and bounced past the 225 and hit the fence (downhill range). Probably wont be hitting driver this weekend lol...

Looks pretty good. Now would just recommend feeling more weight forward to keep making it better, straighten out the ball flight, would like to see you swing outward more. Best way to do it is change the direction the weight is moving. Take a look at those videos I posted yesterday.

THESES ARE JUST NOTES TO MYSELF, FEEL FREE TO IGNORE. TYPING THINGS OUT HELPS ME REMEMBER THEM, THAT'S WHY I'M DOING THIS . . .

 

 

 

So close to breaking 80 lately...shot 81 two weeks ago, 82 and 83 a few times each over the last 2-3 months. Not complaining...I never thought I'd be breaking 90 at this point. Keeping track of every not-so-great shot (i.e. yards, club used, result, etc) I've given myself 2 main things to focus on while maintaining short game and short irons (strengths). . .

 

  • Accuracy with mid-long irons, 3H, 3W and D 
  • Increasing distances

 

Notes - Things that have been working after 2-3 range sessions and some mirror work at home (working on the above two focus points)

 

  1. Accuracy w/ mid-long irons, etc.
    • extra steady head
    • fix tendency to close shoulders at setup, and take the time to double check alignment before EVERY SHOT (duh)
    • visualize

 

      2. Inc. distances

  • relax shoulders, then wrists, then grip
  • solid connection feet w/ ground
  • stable feet/legs, coil, straight left arm to 10 o'clock
  • arms close and connected to body (Hogan drill)
  • ball forward in stance
  • weight forward x 1,000,000
  • quick and smooth tempo

 

 

Have not been a long hitter since learning to play golf. 7iron is typically 150-155. Can't believe how a few little things involving loosening up and lower-body stability can add so many yard while not feeling like I am swinging harder.  Found a 168 flag at the range and was hitting 7 there comfortably. Scores may suffer for awhile trying to work out distances on the course, but super excited to see where this is headed.

Grip changes. Weak left hand in the left pic, right hand too far on top. Awesome in the right pic, left hand is stronger and the right hand is on the aft side of the grip. Right elbow feels "soft" in order to have the right forearm lower than the left.

 

 

A5. Old downswing on the left, shaft is steep (pointing inside the ball) with a cupped left wrist. Much different on the right, shaft shallowing with a flat left wrist. 

 

A6, club head tipping out on the left, leads to the path being across the ball, results in weak pull fades. On the right, club is inside the hands, left wrist feeling bowed, allows you to swing out to the right and hit it solid.

Pretty cool. It looks like fun. Can't help being a little jealous... :)

Keep us updated on your progress. I really enjoy following my swing threads. It can be very encouraging, not to mention informative.

Thanks man...yeah, it was really cool the way they teach. I knew I had a bad flip but wasn't sure how to proceed...I hadn't really had time to work on my swing (just been playing) for awhile and just started playing golf last March. Lots of work to do, but I could see the potential with a few shots already. Love the ball flight when the path/impact are correct.
