Varsity is a stretch, but it is very possible because we need to shoot below 40 both times to have a chance.
Anyways, any advice on what should be going through my mind when I'm playing/before or what not would be greatly appreciated!
There shouldn't necessarily be anything going through your mind. Keep your mind clear and don't get ahead of yourself. Hit fairways, hit greens, and make putts. If you start getting fixated on your score, or dwelling on past shots, bad things can happen. Play smart golf and I'm sure you'll do fine. If you're shooting around 41, then you obviously have a pretty good game already. Don't put too much pressure on yourself to make varsity. Just take it a hole at a time and do the best you can.
My son is starting preseason tryouts this Saturday. His actual qualifying rounds start in two weeks.
His short game is really rusty and his drives were pulling. We fixed the pulls, and I might need to consult with Mike and Dana to give him a swing tune up. We'll see if I can convince him to start 5SK rather than go to his regular coach, either way he needs to be tuned up a bit.
We are going to par3 courses twice a week in the evenings, and the first one helped him a lot. He was scoring 48 on 9 last Sunday, I really hope he does better this Saturday. He also needs to score below 40 to qualify for varsity, and his typical tuned up score is 41-42. He is still one of the younger freshman so he really is trying for varsity next year, but it would be a bonus to make it this year.
IMO, you don't really need to make varsity until Junior year. Most high school sports are like that anyway.
So, no pressure.
Keep us posted on your results, it would be good knowledge for my son.
Congratulations, nice job. May your next few rounds also be just as good or better.
Thanks for the beta. He just read through your thread, and says, thanks.
Yes, his actual qualifiers are this Monday, Tues. and Weds. He has a chance at it, but the upper grades have priority if they are of equal skill.
Like I mentioned earlier, it would be a bonus if he made it, but we don't really have any expectations.
Thanks for asking.
