Well I started playing golf about 14 years ago. Had a set fitted to me at Edwin Watts. I took many yrs off and just picked up my old clubs last year. Been playing quit often and became a member of a local course. So I went in to GolfSmith and hit- g25, Cobra bio-cell, Callaway Xhot2. So after hitting numerous balls the g25 black dot felt great. Now here's my question? Last set I was measured, swung on the plexi glass board to see where I was striking the club. This time it was different and just hit what felt good. Should I get a true measurement fitting? Grips? Pitch, lie, loft?

Agree.... But hitting on a mat vs grass is different. Correct?

If it ain't broke...

Horrible advice!! What does that even mean???

Yes absolutely get fit, make sure all specs are where they need to be. If possible I would do this outside instead of off mats and hitting into a screen. A true fitting might show the fitter needs to adjust lie on every club but differently on every club. You really just dont know...

If you have to hit inside due to weather or no outdoor fitters find a good local fitter that has been doing this for a long time. Many people cut corners or simply just dont know what they are doing. Take your time, find the right person, get the right clubs for YOU, enjoy the game.

This is for irons, wedges, woods, drivers, putters...everything

lol It means he said the club feels great. I'm sure fitting is valuable to people who have a consistent and reliable swing that they're happy with, or are very short or very tall. And if that's the op, then sure, knock yourself out. But if he's like most--inconsistent and still tinkering--how do you know where all the specs "need to be?"

You are making a point for getting fit by a pro...Maybe he has no idea where his specs need to be, so you recommend buying something off the shelf. Getting fit is having someone figure out your specs based upon the swing you have now. Down the road you can get your specs changed on clubs if and when he gets better. I dont think anyone should buy off the rack (especially new) without having someone take a look at their swing and the clubs. Easiest and probably most misunderstood would be shaft selection...So many simply buy a Stiff shaft when they have no idea of swing speed, odd to think you could gain 10 yards by going down in stiffness.

I figure he's already got the right flex since he actually hit with a bunch of clubs and found one that "felt great." I think there are 2 types of off-the-rack: "zomg gimme them new Callaways, xtra stiff!!!!11" and "lemme hit a few and see what I'm comfortable with." I see your point though. Guess it can't hurt. I'd just make sure he still thinks it feels great after the mods (if any).

Thanks for the info. I've been playing for a bit but want to get better. That's my goal, now I want to have some Thing that is for Me. So I'm Going to ask them when I pick them up about a true fitting. I already purchased the G25 black dot. I don't like the grips so I'm going to have new Winn grips put on and get these where I need them, before I walk out the door

I like this kinda thread. Thats because I am a "where did the ball fly" kinda guy. If you get a set and hit them and they fly where you think..lucky man. You may tweak one or two clubs to space them or whatever, but the obvious obvious is obvious. I spent a grand on some 588s once and had them all spec'd but they sucked. Ball flight rules.

I enjoy reading the responses here. I'm By no means a 70's shooter but,I've spent a good amount and want them right for me. As stated, I'm short 5ft6in and want something I can play with for years. I have pretty good ball flight and want to make sure I don't have something that's too long, or too upright for me.

Then just get forged and you can bend the lalapalooza out of them. Your clubs will be 35 to 46 inches so you can adjust them across winter summer or left and right.

After speaking to my local golfsmith, I spoke to the manager and he was very helpful. He did everything I wanted and everything is great. I had and had new WINN grips put on and I cant wait to hit these clubs more. I also bought me a new g25 fairway 4. Just thought id share my experience with Golfsmith

    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
