During a game of stableford on the ninth hole I told my playing partners I was going ahead into the clubhouse to go to the toilet because I couldn't score and to save time. I picked up the wrong ball witness by two of the other players but not the one whose ball it was and proceeded .I was not marking that players ball. What is the ruling?

Stableford is a form of stroke play. The ball is replaced and there is no penalty. Rule 18-4 pertains. Had you been a match play opponent, you would have incurred a penalty of one stroke.

But I was in the rest room in the clubhouse with his ball in my pocket.

Were you there all day? ;-) Under rule 1-4, in equity, I would allow the player to substitute another ball in place of the one you removed.

    • My first instinct is don't put grooves in a roll face putter. But, it's your putter so... I think we'd all be in a better position to advise you if you posted some photos.  Let us know what you decide and how it comes out.

    • I play in a family event a few times a year with many 20-30HC players recently I was beaten off the stick by my 23HC cousin hubby he got an 83 I had a shocker 87 ...to have beaten him I would have had to have scored a 66 off the stick !!! my lowest at our local course is 73  ...was his best game for the year ...so many lucky shots    IMHO I'd say your mate won't need more than a couple of years to beat you ..
