My visit to Modern Golf in Toronto, Canada

I recently made a decision to make an upgrade to the clubs in my bag. I have some rather lofty goals for this season and wanted to make sure that my clubs were not going to be working against me. In my recent work with Dave Wedzik and Erik Barzeski at GOLF EVOLUTION it became apparent that I could not create the proper launch conditions with my current driver. I also had some questions about the irons that I played. After a pretty exhaustive search and decided to schedule an appointment at Modern Golf in Toronto, Canada. And boy am I glad that I did...a1_smile.gif

The appointment that I scheduled was set up to evaluate all 14 clubs in my bag. My wedges were fit by @david_wedzik and Erik @iacas and my putter was fitted by James Hirshfield so I knew those were spot on. But, to look at the driver, fairway woods, hybrid and irons it was cheaper to do the total package.

When I first arrived they did a full evaluation on my current set of clubs
-Swing weight
-Shaft weight
-Frequency
-CPM
-Loft, lie and length

In this pic you can see some of the equipment they use to evaluate clubs. Plus in the background you can see some of the shafts that they offer. They have developed a system which I think is their own to swap out any club head with any shaft so that you can try any combination.

After my clubs were checked out I met Ian Fraser, one of the owners of Modern Golf and the person that would be doing my fitting. We then moved into one of their hitting bays.

I spent the next three hours hitting irons, drivers, fairway woods and hybrids. Of course I hit my own first and then discussed the Trackman data with Ian. I was then able to try various club head and shaft combinations and compare them to my own. We then prioritized what needed the most attention. In my case, it was the driver followed by my irons. Like I thought I launched the driver too low but I also found out that I should be playing a softer shaft in both my driver and irons and that my lie angle was too flat in my irons.

One of the things that truly amazed me about experience was that after spending three hours hitting numerous club combinations and answering a million of my questions there was absolutely no pressure by a single club.

In the end I went with Jetspeed driver with the F1 Motore shaft picking up on average 21 yards of carry. Possibly more important I increased my launch angle to 15.4 degrees and reduced the spin axis from 5.7 degrees to 4.7 degrees.

I also ordered a set of Chikara irons with the KBS Tour V shafts. It hard to describe how good these irons felt. I've long wanted a set of irons that I can play until the face wears out (hopefully right in the sweet spot) and I feel confident that these are them.

I highly recommend any one in the market for new clubs to consider making at trip to Modern Golf. Their staff is very professional, incredibly knowledgable and the facility will blow you away.

Great review!  Modern Golf is literally down the street from me as I live in Mississauga (which is the Toronto suburb that Modern Golf is in).

I have been to Modern Golf myself and have had many friends get their clubs fit by them.  It's great that you were able to enjoy the experience and it makes me smile to see a Canadian company get some love...

If you are ever up here again in the summer, hit me up and I'll take you out.  We have some really nice courses up here.

@bjfox10, I'm going to whisper so @Deryck Griffith doesn't notice… but this is as good a reason to "make up a reason" to have to go back to Toronto as you're gonna get… Just consider inviting me along when you go. ;)

Haha....I would LOVE IT if you guys came up!  You do know though they are playing golf in the snow these days.. The things you do out of desperation! :-\

In all seriousness though, I would be more than happy to host some TST'ers here in the Toronto.  Late Spring, Early Summer trip that involves golf, fun downtown and lots of booze! :)
